Russia's MiG-31 Foxhound Fighter jets Moscow's Old Mach 3 Monster - The Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound is a supersonic interceptor aircraft developed for use by the Soviet Air Forces. The aircraft was designed by the Mikoyan design bureau as a replacement for the earlier MiG-25 Foxbat. The MiG-31 is based on and shares design elements with the MiG-25. The MiG-31 has the distinction of being one of the fastest combat jets in the world. It continues to be operated by the Russian Air Force and the Kazakhstan Air Force following the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Russian Defence Ministry expects the MiG-31 to remain in service until 2030 or beyond. A long-range supersonic interceptor aircraft, the MiG-31 Foxhound, a two-seat aircraft developed principally for the Russian and Kazakhstan Air Forces, was derived from MiG-25 Foxbat. The maiden flight of the MiG-31 took place in September 1975. Mikoyan is the designer and manufacturer of the MiG-31. MiG-31 can work efficiently in all weather conditions while fulfilling visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR), day and night. It is equipped with state-of-the-art digital avionics. MiG-31 was the first soviet fighter aircraft to have true look-down and shoot-down capability. Approximately 500 MiG-31 aircraft have been produced, out of which 370 were delivered to the Russian Air Force and 30 are in service with Kazakhstan Air Force. The remaining aircraft were upgraded to different variants under several upgrade programmes. Only some of the Russian MiG fleet have been upgraded to MiG-31BM standards under the upgrade programme. The MiG-25 Foxbat was unable to fly at low altitudes. The installation of inefficient turbojet engines led to decrease in combat range at supersonic speeds and an increase in the speed gauge of the MiG-25 resulted in the destruction of the aircraft’s engine. In an effort to overcome the drawbacks of the MiG-25 Foxbat, the MiG-31 was developed to fly at low altitudes with required supersonic speeds. The nuclear-armed North American XB-70 Valkyrie would fly more than three times the speed of sound and at an altitude of 75,000 feet. Only a handful of the XB-70’s would be needed to overwhelm any target. The Soviets would have just a few short years to respond to the threat by designing a new interceptor that could match the incredible performance of America’s XB-70 aircraft. But to guard the enormous air space of the Soviet Union, the interceptor would have to be quickly engineered and mass produced by the hundreds. The result would be the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25, an interceptor engineered to do one thing; climb, catch and bring down the American bomber. But the aircraft would end up as one of the most misunderstood jets of the Cold War. Quick Facts The MIG-31 is a supersonic interceptor aircraft used by the Russian and Kazakh Air Forces. Known as Foxhound in the west, the jet is one of the fastest combat aircraft. The MIG-31 first entered service in 1981… On the other hand, the F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter aircraft designed for air superiority and high speed interception. The aircraft was introduced in 1976. The F-15 has phenomenal air combat record of 100 aerial victories. 2. Performance The MIG-31 is powered by a pair of turbofan engines capable of producing 68,000 pounds of thrust combined. These engines can push the aircraft to maximum speed of Mach 2.83. With maximum range of 1,900mi, the jet can conduct combat operations within the radius of 900mi… Similarly, the F-15 is powered by 2 turbofan engines, generating 58,000 pounds of thrust combined. With the help of these engines, the aircraft can gain maximum speed of Mach 2.5. The F-15 comes with ferry range of 3,450mi and can combat within the radius of 1,221mi. 3. Maneuverability The MIG-31’s design was based on cold war era doctrine to intercept and destroy enemy with incredible high speed, altitude and rate of climb instead of maneuverability. Its airframe can only sustain 5Gs maneuvers. An aircraft’s maneuvering capacity steadily decreases with altitude. On the other side, the high thrust-to-weight ratio and low wing loading provide the F-15 outstanding maneuverability. Wing loading is the ratio of an aircraft's weight to its wing area. The lower wing loading combined with higher thrust to weight ratio allow the jet to turn tightly without bleeding the speed. 4. Radar & Avionics The MiG-31 was among the first aircraft equipped with passive electronically scanned array radar, which can detect fighter aircraft sized target from 200mi of range. The radar is capable to track up to 24 targets and attack 8 of them simultaneously. On the other hand, F-15 eagle is equipped with the APG-63 and 70 radar, which are capable to lock both low and high-flying targets. These radars can detect and track its opponent from 205mi of distance. 5. Firepower The MIG-31 is outfitted with 8 hardpoints to carry a combination of missiles and bombs. For long range engagements, MIG-31 is armed with R-33 missile capable of engaging high speed targets within the distance of 190mi. The aircraft can carry R-37 hypersonic air-to-air missile with operational range of 250mi. On the contrary, the F-15 can carry 13 tons weapons payload on its 9 hardpoints. For shorter range engagements, the aircraft is armed with aim-9, aim-7 and radar-guided medium-range air-to-air missiles. The aircraft is capable of shooting aim-9x high off-boresight missiles. Two contracts related to the same thing were signed on August 24 during the ARMY-2021 Forum. The exclusive serial manufacturer of the MiG-31 aircraft is the Nizhny Novgorod Aircraft Factory “Sokol” of the RAC “MiG”. The MiG-31's maximum detection range for air targets was increased to 320 km. It has several avionics attached to the MiG-29SMT and has a refueling probe. Russian state media outlet TASS has announced that the new MiG-31I jet will feature in the Army 2022 international military technical forum, which is scheduled to run from August 15-22 and has traditionally featured some of the country’s most advanced weapons systems for display. The aircraft will appear alongside the MiG-31BM/BSM Foxhound interceptor from which it is derived, and of which over 100 are in service in the Russian Air Force. The new Foxhound variant was reportedly designed to be able to launch small spacecraft into orbit, providing a unique new capability to the Russian fleet. The MiG-31 is the heaviest class of tactical combat jet operational anywhere in the world, and its long range, high payload and unmatched speed and operational altitude have long made it an ideal platform for launching both satellites and anti-satellite weapons, Although work on an anti satellite warfare variant began in the 1980s as the MiG-31D, before ending when the Soviet Union collapsed, work resumed in the mid 2010s with a Foxhound armed for anti satellite warfare first seen in 2018. The MiG-31’s airframe has also been used to develop what is in many respects the world’s most potent strike fighter, the MiG-31K, which entered service in late 2017 and carries the Kh-47M2 hypersonic ballistic missile with a Mach 10 speed and 2000km engagement range. Russia's MiG-31 fighter tasked to conduct air patrols in Ukraine detected an air target during one of its flights.
