Beginning as a sleepy fishing village, Ocho Rios has seen explosive growth in the last decade to become a popular tourist destination featuring duty-free shopping, a cruise-ship terminal, world-renowned tourist attractions and several beaches and acclaimed resorts. In addition to being a port of call for cruise ships, Ocho Rios also hosts cargo ships at the Reynolds Pier for the exportation of sugar, limestone, and in the past, bauxite.The estimated population of the town in 2011 was 16,671, which is nearly 10% of the total population of St. Ann. The town is served by both the Donald Sangster International Airport (97 km west of Ocho Rios) and the Ian Fleming International Airport (17 km east of Ocho Rios). Scuba diving and other water sports are offered in the town's vicinity. The name "Ocho Rios" is a possible misnomer, as there are not currently eight rivers in the area. It could be a British corruption of the original Spanish name "Las Chorreras" ("the waterfalls"), a name given to the village because of the nearby Dunn's River Falls. In 2008, the attraction Mystic Mountain opened with a bobsled experience inspired by the Jamaican bobsled team that participated in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. The attraction received a $570-million upgrade in 2019. The North Coast Highway from the Sangster International Airport at Montego Bay to Ocho Rios has been improved since 2007 and the journey is now an hour and forty five minutes drive. On 26 August 2011, the Jamaican government announced a $21 million revitalization plan for the resort area. Since March 2016, with the opening of the North-South portion of Highway 2000 (whose North terminus is located at Mammee Bay, a suburb of Ocho Rios), driving and commute times into the nation's capital, Kingston, have gone from over 2 hours to a little under an hour. The opening of this highway has reduced traffic on the old route between Jamaica's two cities (through the town and onto Fern Gully) immensely. En la costa norte de la isla de Jamaica, se encuentra Ocho Ríos.El destino turístico por excelencia de Jamaica Lo que más me gusta de Jamaica, salvaje como ella sola, es su combinación de playa y naturaleza. Escarbando entre caminos a veces demasiado hostiles (aquí lo de asfaltar carreteras no se estila mucho), de pronto puedes encontrarte pequeños paraísos sumidos en la calma y quietud de una isla que lo tiene todo Blue Hole es una sucesión de cascadas, caminos, cuestas y vegetación espesa que se multiplica a ambas laderas del río. Hay dos formas de hacer el recorrido, contratando un guía conocedor sumun del terreno que presta su ayuda para subir, trepar y bajar entre las rocas y caminos (es asombroso observar a los guías trepar las cascadas y lanzándose en picado desde lo más alto), Dunn’s River Falls: Tal vez el lugar más famoso de la zona de Ocho Ríos. Las cataratas del río Dunn son la atracción turística por excelencia de todo el turista que visite Ocho Rios. Esta espectacular catarata surge de unas rocas situadas a 183 metros de altura y cae directamente en la playa Algunos consejos para tu visita a Dunn’s River Falls 1. Es necesario un calzado apropiado: chanclas calzado de río de goma antideslizante y que sujeten el pie. Si no tienes, puedes alquilarlas allí, al precio de 10 USD. 2. Lleva traje de baño. Al llegar al parque, tienes unas taquillas donde dejar la ropa y los objetos personales. 3. Para evitar la masificación (no hay turista que no vaya a este lugar) y poder escalar con tranquilidad y sin agobios, ve bien pronto. A partir de las 11 de la mañana ya se hace imposible Las playas de Ocho Ríos estan siempre llenas de gente, sobre todo cuando llega un crucero a la ciudad.
