In Phong Nha besuchten wir einige der größten Höhlen der Welt. Leider nicht die größten Höhlen, da uns die Zeit fehlte - aber mit der Paradise Cave war definitiv eine der spektakulärsten Höhlen dabei, welche wir selbst jemals betreten durften. Später ging es sogar noch per Boot durch die Phong Nha Cave, was ein genialer Abschluss unseres Tages gewesen war. Ebenso konnten wir die Dark Cave nicht besuchen, auf Grund von Jessicas größter Angst. Unsere Unterkunft in Phong Nha können wir euch auf jeden Fall auch empfehlen: * 🤍 Es ist nicht das sauberste Homestay/Guesthouse, aber die Angestellten/Besitzer waren super nett, warmherzig und hilfsbereit, egal worum es ging und es war ein tolles Miteinander! Jan de Haan PARADISE CAVE "Symphonic Poem for Fanfare Orchestra" Dedicated to the World Music Contest (WMC) in Kerkrade (NL) De Thien Duong-grot – oftewel Paradise Cave – is gelegen in een van de nationale parken van Vietnam. Dit 31 kilometer lange grottenstelsel, dicht bij de grens van Laos, werd pas in 2005 ontdekt. Vanwege zijn indrukwekkende schoonheid werd de grot door de ontdekkers het ‘paradijs’ genoemd. Een bezoek aan Vietnam bracht componist Jan de Haan onder andere naar deze buitenaards aandoende plek. De grootsheid en adembenemende pracht van dit natuurwonder maakten zo veel indruk dat het hem inspireerde tot het schrijven van een compositie. Het betreden van de grot is een magistrale ervaring, alsof je een kathedraal binnenwandelt. Deze ervaring wordt in het begin van de compositie uitgebeeld door een majestueus thema, dat als een soort leidmotief regelmatig in het werk terugkeert. Tijdens de bezichtiging van het adembenemende natuurverschijnsel valt de componist van de ene verbazing in de ander. De enorme stalagmieten en stalactieten van tientallen meters hoog lijken deel uit te maken van een soort museum. Ze vormen een belangrijke inspiratiebron, maar ook de ruige plekken, daar waar de grot deels is ingestort, zijn een dankbaar gegeven om te verklanken. De componist beleefde Paradise Cave als kunst, maar dan in miljoenen jaren gecreëerd door de natuur. Bij thuiskomst zette hij deze indrukwekkende ervaring om in muziek. Dit resulteerde in een kleurrijk en spectaculair concertwerk voor fanfareorkest. Paradise Cave is opgedragen aan het Wereld Muziek Concours (WMC). Dit internationale muziekfestival wordt sinds 1951 vierjaarlijks in Kerkrade gehouden. Dit evenement, dat door Jan de Haan al sinds zijn studententijd wordt bezocht, neemt een voorname plaats in zijn muzikale carrière in. Eerst kwam hij er als bezoeker, maar later ook als finalist van de internationale dirigentenwedstrijd. Hij trad er op als dirigent van een orkest en was er bovendien meerdere keren werkzaam als jurylid. Paradise Cave trip. Family came to visit, from Australia. Michael, Howie and Bong are taking them around the the local sights. We are starting on a high in the Paradise Cave. Doing the exclusive 7km Adventure. It’s a great trip. The tour today, had people ranging in age from 7-76 years. Welcome to the world's largest cave. This cave has it's own weather and a lake as well. Although it is very expensive to experience the whole cave, it is very cheap to just have a short tour of it. How to visit the Caves of Phong Nha (Son Trach)? Visiting the caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park is one of the main sights in Vietnam. There are several caves you can visit, which was also a little bit confusing when we were planning our trip. So here you find all the important information you need to visit the amazing caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang. How to get to Phong Nha? So first of all you need to know where to stay for visiting the caves. Our advice is not to stay in Dong Hoi which is 55 km (34 miles) away from the caves. So the best and closest place to stay is Phong Nha village, also called Son Trach. If you travel north you probably come from Hue. The bus ride takes around 4-5 hours and costs 160.000 VND ($7, 6.20€ and £4.60). When you travel south you maybe come from Ninh Bình. In this case it is possible that you need to take a sleeper bus: the 7.5 hour bus ride costs around 200.000 VND ($8.80, 7.70 € and £5.75). Where to stay? Phong Nha village is basically just one long street where you find all the hotels, backpackers and restaurants. There is not a lot to do here, so we would recommend to stay here for around one or two nights depending how many caves you want to visit. We stayed in a hotel called Khach San Hoa Phuong Hotel, which was alright and costs around $10 for a double room. The hostel Easy Tiger is also a popular place to stay at, but here you need a reservation in high season. It is also possible to stay at a homestay or farmstay, but these places are a little bit out of town. So better check the address and location when you book a room in advance. There are not many places for food, but the Tuan Ngoc restaurant is certainly a good choice – here you can also hire scooters (see below). How to visit the caves? One of the hardest decisions you have to make is probably which caves you should visit. This really depends on your time and money. Here you find a short description of the main caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park: Phong Nha Cave: was used as a hospital during the Vietnam War. You enter the cave by boat. It is better to share the boat with as many people as possible as you pay for the boat and not for the seat. Dark Cave: is an adventure cave. It is all about ziplining, walking through dark tunnels, fighting in the mud and swimming in small creeks. A visit costs around 350.000 VND ($15, 13.60 € and £10). We asked people how the Dark Cave was and they said “very dark”. Paradise Cave: people recommended us to visit the Paradise Cave before we even went to Vietnam. This cave is enormous, illuminated and spectacular. The entry fee is 250.000 VND ($11, 9.70 € and £7.15). We only visited the Paradise Cave but this is truly one of the most impressive sights we have ever seen. It is definitely a must-see in Vietnam! The best way to visit the caves is by hiring a scooter. Hiring one scooter costs around 90.000 VND for a day and you need petrol for roughly 50.000 VND. We hired the scooter in the Tuan Ngoc Restaurant. You reach the caves quite easy as you can make a big loop, first you pass by Dark Cave, then Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave at the end. From Phong Nha Cave you can ride back to Phong Nha village, but be careful – the last part is a gravel path. On the way back, between Paradise Cave and Dark Cave you can visit the Suoi Nuoc Mooc, a blue spring where you can cool off. The water is crystal clear, but the whole area is quite touristy. You pay 80.000 VND for the entry + 10.000 VND for hiring a life jacket (you have to wear it). For a price of 180.000 VND you can do some kayaking through the spring (very little space for kayaking) and you can climb through a high-wire garden (not that spectacular by the way). Climbing up to Paradise Cave (Paradísarhellir) in Iceland. The mountains of Eyjafjöll are mostly volcanic tuff rock, which is produced under pressure from subglacial and underwater volcanic eruptions. The old sea cliffs seen here, contain many layers of volcanic tuff and are interspersed with cubic and pillow lava formations which are the result of frequent volcanic eruptions over the millenia and are evidence that the area has undergone several glacial periods. Paradise Cave is located in one of these pillow lava layers and is believed to have originated as a magma-channel, eventually becoming a gas tunnel. From the old sheep sorting pen "Seljalandsrétt" there is 700+m walk to the base of the cliff and then a 10m vertical climb up to the opening of the cave. Chains have been installed to aid in the ascent which is strenuous and not for the fainthearted. The cave is 7m long and 3.8m wide in some places. The walls of the cave are covered with runic and ogham inscriptions and over 20 names can be found there, including the name Steinmóð Bárðarson, a 15th century deacon from the Westman Islands. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact date of these inscriptions, but they are believed to be from before 1600. There is a famous 16th century story surrounding this cave about a noble woman from a wealthy family, Anna from Stóra Borg and her secret lover Bjarna Hjalta, who used the cave as his hideout for four years. The story has ben published in the book "Anna from Stóra Borg" written by Jón Trausta. Hi everyone! OKKO twins :) We traveled to Paradise Cave! It is one of the largest and most famous caves in Vietnam. It was found in 2005 and it is 31km in length. It is the longest dry cave in Asia. To visit, we decided to take a half-day tour! Our first stop was at the Botanical Gardens. We were pleasantly surprised to see a beautiful waterfall, as well as interestingly see a monkey and porcupine fight (never saw this before!). We did visit Costa Rica and saw on the beaches monkeys and raccoons fight... Our second stop was of course - Paradise Cave! It is definitely the largest cave we visited, as well as the most lit up (great for photos)! Amazing to see mother nature create something so beautiful. It's an incredibly beautiful park in the Bố Trạch and Minh Hóa districts of central Quảng Bình Province of Vietnam. Many tourists come here every day to see the world's most fascinating caves. (!) Please note, that Phong Nha is an expensive area for tourists. Be ready to pay to enter every cave. And for some of them, you are even recommended to hire a guide. As we don't like guided tours, we visited Paradise Cave. And honestly - you must go there! This cave was far above my expectations - the most beautiful and spectacular stalactites and stalagmites I've seen in my life. We also learned that Paradise cave was discovered in 2005 and opened up to tourists only in 2010! There are lots of things to do in Phong Nha national park besides caving. For example, you can visit the Botanic garden with a beautiful waterfall as we did. Or just driving around the park on a motorbike can be a good option too. Most of the homestays offer simple bicycles for free or to rent a motorbike for small money. And if you are not lucky with the weather, go to Phong Nha Coffee Station (🤍 - they make the best coffee in Vietnam.
