The bin's worm population was split; half of them remaining in the bin & the other half of the worms were loaded into the hollowed-out pumpkin. A bunch of shredded paper was loaded in after them to keep the worms up near the top of the pumpkin. The idea being that the pumpkin would be consumed not just from below but also from throughout its inside surface. It worked just as planned.. the worms made their way through the pumpkin quickly. The top surface of the bid's contents were continuously being moved around - by the worms underneath the surface, and with the help of other helper critters in the bin such as the many pill bugs. In this video, I show you how to identify a red wiggler worm - Eisenia Fetida that I found in my compost bin. Step One: The environment that you find them in is important. The tiger worm is found in compost bins, leaf litter, and manure. Step Two: For identification use only adult worms. The presents of the clitellum or collar indicates that it is a mature species. Step Three: Look at the color of the head. The red wriggler has a red head. Step Four: Measure the size of the worm fully extended. The red wriggler is less than 5 inches long with the average being about 2 3/4 inch long and mainly between 2 to 4 inches long. Step Five: Examine the head for alternating stripes of Red with light bands between. There is more scientific characteristics that you can examine but these main features should help you identify the red wiggler fairly easy. In this first video in my “Raising Red Wigglers” series, I show you how I set up my new red wiggler farm. I decided to start raising red wigglers and begin phasing out my mealworm farm for several reasons. First, red wigglers are less expensive to raise I don't have to buy wheat bran to feed them and can simply use table scraps and shredded paper. Second, red wigglers require less maintenance I only have to add food material to the red wiggler bins once a week whereas I have to clean and sort the mealworm bins every few days. Third, the red wigglers help me with my food composting, whereas my mealworms don't. Fourth, the red wigglers generate beneficial "castings" (just like my mealworms) that I can use in my garden. And finally, when I feed the red wigglers to my chickens, I don't have to worry if a few worms "escape" because they are beneficial to the soil and don't pose a threat if they start to proliferate (as can happen with darkling beetles). At worst, my chickens will just have more red wigglers to munch on! Of course, this is a new project for me, so we'll see how it goes, but I am hopeful that things will turn out great! 🤍 I split the red wigglers bins last time and they have plowed through the food and left pretty little cocoons everywhere. I started with 500 cocoons from Emily the Crazy Worm Lady in May of 2019. This population is entirely from those first 500 cocoons. They have been in 10 -gallon totes of various sizes since the beginning.
The cocoons of African Nightcrawlers, Red Wigglers & European Nightcrawlers were placed into a see through 3-chamber container and a photo was taken every 2 minutes over the course of 50 days to produce this time-lapse video. Over feeding my compost worms to generate heat for freezing weather later this week!! Winter only last a couple weeks but I want my red wiggler composting worms to stay warm so they continue to produce natural fertilizer & soil amendments in the form or worm castings for my garden!! In this video I get a baseline internal temperature of the bin, check on the last feeding zone and run into tons of worms and worm balls!! I finish up with a pretty big feeding, even though they still had some food left from last time, in order to try to generate some additional heat for them. In fact I may add some rice in a couple of days to further heat up the bin before the freeze hits.
