Available On Demand March 2nd. Director: Claude Lanzmann Writer: Claude Lanzmann Twelve years in the making, Shoah is Lanzmann’s monumental epic on the Holocaust and features interviews with survivors, bystanders, and perpetrators in 14 countries. The film does not contain any historical footage but rather features interviews which seek to “reincarnate” the Jewish tragedy and also visits places where the crimes took place. It grew out of Lanzmann’s concern that the genocide perpetrated only 40 years earlier was already retreating into the mists of time, and that atrocity was becoming sanitized as History. His massive achievement – at once epic and intimate, immediate and definitive – is a triumph of form and content that reveals hidden truths while rewriting the rules of documentary filmmaking. 35 years after its original release, Shoah remains nothing less than essential. #Shoah #IFCFilms Subscribe to IFC Films: 🤍 Connect with IFC Online IFC Films Official Site: 🤍 Follow IFC Films on Twitter: 🤍 Find IFC Films on Facebook: 🤍 Follow IFC Films on Instagram : 🤍

Sjoah: kapper in Treblinka (deel 1)

"Stalin gave his troops the right to rape, to steal, to kill, to do whatever they want to do. And believe me, they did.” Usually, when we discuss the Holocaust, it’s easy to distinguish between the perpetrators and victims. However, some instances of wartime violence blur these lines, and identifying the perpetrator/victim becomes unclear. Lisa Slater, for example, was a Protestant Christian German woman who served as a teletypist for the German army during World War II. She claims to have been unaware of the persecution of Jews (and the Nazi’s other victims). In her USC Shoah Foundation testimony, Lisa recalls the Soviet soldiers’ violent victimization of her and other German women. March is Women’s History Month in the United States. About Shoah On the occasion of the film's 25th anniversary, Claude Lanzmann's nine-and-a-half hour landmark documentary, SHOAH, considered one of the greatest films ever made, will be re-released in the US. The “Witnesses to the Age” project is a collection of interviews with people who experienced life under 20th-century totalitarian regimes. Now is our last chance to speak with those who remember World War II – sadly, within the next several years they’ll no longer be with us. Our recordings make up the Pilecki Institute’s vast archive of oral history. We publish fragments of the interviews on our YouTube channel. On the 77th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, we would like to present a documentary produced by the Pilecki Institute’s Film Projects Team and the National Audiovisual Institute [Filmoteka Narodowa – Instytut Audiowizualny (FINA)]. WITNESSES TO THE AGE OF SHOAH [Original Polish title: ŚWIADKOWIE EPOKI: CZAS ZAGŁADY] The film consists of several stories told by our guests – Holocaust witnesses who recall the events that took place in Warsaw and the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Put together, their individual memories tell a larger story, which fully conveys the tragic fate of Jews in German-occupied Poland. Their harrowing experiences are presented in an exceptionally raw and powerful way, as the interviews are combined with dramatic archival footage from the collection of the film’s co-producer, the National Audiovisual Institute in Poland. Instead of attempting to show the full story of the Holocaust, in “Witnesses to the Age of Shoah” we aim to give a voice to those who experienced this unimaginable horror first hand. After the Germans entered Warsaw, the situation of Jewish residents began to steadily deteriorate. Jews were victims of harassment, plunder, dehumanization and humiliation. In 1940, they were confined in a special Jewish district (ghetto), many of them died of starvation and diseases, or were ruthlessly killed by Germans. Poles who tried to help their Jewish friends and neighbors were risking their lives, as aiding Jews was punishable by death. The liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto began with deportations of Jews to the Treblinka extermination camp, where they were murdered on a mass scale in gas chambers. On 19 April 1943, the small remaining population of the ghetto decided to die fighting and instigated an uprising which was doomed to fail. The Jewish district of Warsaw soon ceased to exist. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of Jews were being murdered daily in KL Auschwitz-Birkenau. Today, the surviving prisoners of this “Hell on Earth” recall these horrific events. The film “Witnesses to the Age of Shoah” first premiered on 25 January 2020 at Kinoteka in Warsaw, during the event entitled “Pamięć na pokolenia” [Generations of memory] – a screening of films on the subject of the Holocaust. Jewish Holocaust survivor, Henia Bryer, was born in Kielce, Poland in 1925. She survived the Radom ghetto, Auschwitz I concentration camp, Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp, Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Krakau-Plaszow concentration camp, Majdanek concentration camp, and Radom-Armee-Verpflegungslager concentration camp. Henia was liberated from Bergen-Belsen by British armed forces. In her 1995 testimony, Henia recalls the experiences of women during the Holocaust, who were torn from their families, stripped and shaved, forced into sex slavery, and tormented by female SS guards. “They selected 100 young women and they were beautiful. Each one of them was prettier than the other. And we looked at them and we couldn't understand what was going on there. They were well dressed and they seemed to be well fed, and they were beautiful, each one and one. And eventually we found out what was the story with these girls. [...] They were working in a German brothel. They used them for the soldiers that came from the Eastern Front. That was their work.” March is Women’s History Month in the United States.

Claude Lanzmann directed this 9 1/2 hour film of the Holocaust without using a single frame of archive footage. He interviews survivors, witnesses, and ex-Nazis (whom he had to film secretly since they only agreed to be interviewed by audio). His style of interviewing by asking for the most minute details is effective at adding up these details to give a horrifying portrait of the events of Nazi genocide. He also shows, or rather lets some of his subjects themselves show, that the anti-Semitism that caused 6 million Jews to die in the Holocaust is still alive in well in many people that still live in Germany, Poland, and elsewhere. Lanzmann also interviews Holocaust historian Raul Hilberg, who discusses the historical significance of Nazi propaganda against the European Jews, and the Nazi development of the Final Solution. The complete text of the film was published in 1985.
