Russian soldiers are banned from using their smartphones. But a lack of discipline and a desire for attention means they use them anyway. Their posts online provide a wealth of data about their side of the war. Journalist, Mark Krutov, uses this information to track the locations and movements of Russian troops, as well as their low morale and sinking mood. In our series Super Users, VICE World News explores the latest technology being used to fight crime, trafficking, climate change and social injustice. Is there a conspiracy to shrink men’s penises, destroy their sperm, and feminize America’s macho dudes? Well, a range of right-wing conspiracists claim “traditional men” are under attack, poisoned and brainwashed in a plan to weaken them. According to them, the vehicles of this alleged mass emasculation vary widely, from soy products to COVID vaccines. Despite a lack of supporting evidence for these conspiracies against men, they might contain a grain of truth — believers point to studies in complicated, evolving areas of science, on the effects of chemicals like phthalates. While not a globalist plot, the use of endocrine-disrupting substances in packaging and industry could have a real impact on male reproductive health. The Internet has ushered in an era of information overload, but it comes at a cost and ‘the truth’ is more subjective and contested than ever before. In ‘Alternate Reality’, we examine corners of the internet where conspiracy theories about the world have started to have a real impact on society. Across Europe, female far-right politicians are making gains. Many argue their femininity has helped to detoxify male-dominated right-wing politics across the continent, taking their parties to new levels of power. In Italy, Georgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy became the biggest party in parliament in 2022. In France, Marine Le Pen has taken her party from the fringes to the main opposition, two presidential elections in a row. All the while, over in North America, a legion of female alt-right influencers have become figureheads for the far right. A new generation of vloggers, podcasters and “celebrities”, using their platforms to push alt-right views to the masses - reshaping the right in ways like never before. This is how women have become the secret weapon of the far right. The Camorra is one of the oldest criminal institutions in the world, but how it functions in Naples is changing. New child criminal gangs, and the rise of stunting on social media, as opposed to the long-standing rule of omertà, means that the Camorra seemingly will never be the same. VICE heads to the infamous Le Vele Di Scampia, and Parco Verde, to meet a child gang that operates there, and a social worker trying to prevent these children from ending up in the clan, prison, or dead. For the first time on camera, we will hear directly from Camorra members, speaking about how they recruit and use children. In Marseille, gangs fighting for territory have become more violent; setting on fire their rivals, kidnapping, torturing and killing young people to send messages to rival gangs. Most of these crimes have been happening in the Quartiers Nord, an area that according to the families of the victims, has been neglected by the state which allowed crime to proliferate. VICE gains access to the criminals operating in the area who reveal how the traffic of drugs and weapons works, as well as a young lookout and drug dealer. We then speak to Amine, whose brother was brutally murdered at 22 years old and his body was later found burned in the boot of a car. From Medellin’s elite clubbers to the cartel queens that run the underworld, all of a sudden everyone in Colombia seems to be snorting pink “cocaine,” also known as “tucibi.” It’s fashionable, it’s six times as expensive as regular “white” cocaine, it has its own genre of music called “Guaracha,” and it’s so popular that it has even spawned a whole new generation of “neo-narcos.” Cartels are expanding production into Europe, so expect to see this “magic pink powder” in Ibiza this season - if you haven’t already. But here’s the thing - it isn’t cocaine, and has nothing in common with 2CB (the drug's namesake). So, what is it? Matt Shea delves deep into Medellin’s underworld to find out, in a journey that takes us to the cartel queen who started it all. High Society The War on Drugs has been won by drugs. They’re everywhere. Many of them are new, and they’re all more potent. Society is altering chemicals, and chemicals are altering society back, creating new drug scenes - some funny, some bizarre, some terrifying. Drugs on TV usually mean criminals getting busted or addicts in recovery. But this series is about the cultures and people that have grown around the substances. High Society will show you how drugs are shaping our world. Since the show, “To Catch a Predator” went off the air, a corner of YouTube has taken up the mantle: posing as underage kids online, waiting for older men to send sexually explicit messages and then filming a confrontation with the men in public. The Dad's Against Predators duo has been making this content for years but is particularly controversial because law enforcement has publicly denounced them, telling them to leave this work to the professionals. In this episode of My Life Online, we shine a light on the grey area this content inhabits - Are these vigilante YouTube creators helping expose predators or making it more difficult for law enforcement to do their jobs? Are they potentially saving lives or just risking their own? Suroosh Alvi is the co-founder and publisher of VICE, a free monthly magazine that began as a newsprint tabloid in Montreal in 1994. Twenty years later, having survived the “new economy,” cut-throat competition, hostile corporate takeovers and innumerable lawsuits, the magazine exists as a popular counter-culture glossy with its head offices in New York City. VICE’s mandate is to deliver the underbelly of urban culture to the taste maker’s, who indulge in everything from hip hop and punk to skateboarding and fashion as well as scatology and sexual perversities. Over 85,000 copies are distributed free across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, and the publication enjoys massive public response. In the last two years, (2001) the magazine has spun off the VICE Stores, a chain of high-end retail fashion outlets in Toronto, Montreal, New York and soon-to-be opened outlet in Los Angeles; the Website Viceland.com, described as the “illest place for 21st century culture online”; and VICE Fashion, its own signature clothing line. And if that were not enough, there are TV and book deals being brokered with huge American networks and fancy UK publishing houses.
Whatever happened to Vice? Seriously. I mean, they still exist. But if you follow business news, these guys went from being valued at billions of dollars to having so much of that worth disappear. So what happened? Luckily, I was there just as Vice was starting to make its way into the digital media business. I met Shane Smith, and got to see up close what makes him one of the best salesman I've ever seen. I got to see how they were able to form relationships with the trendsetters that influence the Millennial and Gen Z crowds. As you'll see, brands will pay you a pretty penny to reach those trendsetters, and that's one of the main things that helped turn Vice from a punk magazine to a multibillion dollar media empire. But as you'll see, sometimes that can work against you. Even effective communication can get you in trouble if you're not careful about your message. VICE travels to Honduras to meet the infamous MS13 gang and learn about a supposedly powerful new drug that is making them millions. Tiburón or “Shark” is a chemically-altered weed that is said to be more addictive than cocaine and sells like hotcakes. What chemical is used to create this effect remains a mystery. Through spending time with the gang, their clients, their enemies and the Narcotics squad policing it, we learn about the impact this dangerous new drug has had on Honduras. Crucially, we take the toxic weed to a lab to discover if there truly is a secret chemical at the heart of Tiburón. Sunset Boulevard has become shorthand for what Los Angeles represents in the collective imagination. Most people do not see Los Angeles themselves, and instead imagine the world of fame and affluence they see on their TV screens. However, the reality of Los Angeles is not one glamorous place or setting – instead, it is a gigantic, diverse and complicated city, divided by its disparate neighborhoods. To know it you have to travel from east to west, across colliding communities that evoke both glitz and grit. In this episode of City Guides we drive along Sunset Boulevard, stopping at venues and speaking with native Angelenos about the economic and cultural influences that have defined and transformed their neighborhoods. Blogger Jacob Bogle often receives this warning, “State-sponsored actors are attempting to hack into your account.” It’s all because he’s created the most detailed publicly-available map of North Korea, revealing details the totalitarian state would rather the rest of the world didn’t have. What started off as a two-month summer project, has now turned into a decade-long endeavour, with over 64,000 entries. "Former goth stripper Krystle Cole talks about her time spent living in a subterranean missile silo converted into a luxurious LSD manufacturing facility a sort of underground LSD palace. She spent three years of her life running from the DEA, being held partially against her will and used as a guinea pig for strange new psychedelic chemicals. Eventually, her friends-turned-captors were arrested and Krystle herself barely escaped incarceration. She now makes her living as a writer, sharing her experiences in books and on the web. In the backwoods of Georgia, a controversial, right-wing, "anti-terror" militia group gathers once a month to complete field training exercises under the command of Chris Hill—a.k.a Blood Agent. This militia group, called the Georgia III% Security Force, is part of the Three Percenter movement, which is inspired by the unfounded claim that only three percent of colonists fought against the British in the American Revolution. It’s commonly accepted that your 20s is the time to get completely off your nut before calming down and respecting yourself. But increasingly, it seems that British people have a different idea. Over 3.7 million over-45s go raving once a week in the UK, and there has been a 518 per cent increase in over-60s being treated for cocaine abuse since ten years ago. These older ravers face worrying health risks that younger ravers don’t - the drugs are stronger, and their hearts aren’t. Will physiology prove to be the ultimate party pooper, or have these pioneers unlocked the key to eternal youth. - The War on Drugs has been won. By drugs.
