She’s got personality, plus loves everyone and does well in new situations. This is a cat breed that will make your own ears perk up. 1. How do those American Curl ears, get their shape exactly? At birth, the American Curl sports straight ears, but three to five days later those ears start to curl backward. It’s not until she reaches 4 months of age, however, that her ears take on their forever shape, ranging from almost straight to a 90- to 180-degree curve. It’s the curvature of the ear that determines whether the American Curl is pet material or show-floor quality. 2. Do those curly ears affect their hearing? The curled-back shape of the ears doesn’t affect her hearing at all. Similar to those of a Lynx, the American Curl’s ears, which are made of cartilage, feature outward-facing tufts of fur that add a regal, swept-back look to her appearance but make her no more likely to have hearing problems. It’s a good idea to check her ears weekly for wax buildup — just to be on the safe side. 3. How did the American Curl breed come to be? The American Curl is one of the youngest breeds to grace the cat world. Discovered in June 1981 in Lakewood, California, the first American Curl was a black beauty named Shulamith. She later gave birth to a litter of kittens, all sporting her trademark curled ears, and a new breed was, as they say, born. 4. This breed also sports a terrific tail. . The ears may turn heads, but the American Curl’s plume-like tail, which is so reminiscent of a feather boa, is another physical trait that hooks feline fanciers, and ups the elegant ante of the breed as a whole. While their curled ears may be their namesake feature, the breed has other defining features as well. Large, walnut-shaped eyes are a trademark, and they can come in a variety of colors from blue to amber to yellow. Also: they won’t cover your house in hair. American curls have a silky coat and little undercoat, so they don’t require much grooming, and shedding is very minimal. 5. American Curl cats are known for opening doors and cabinets. American Curls are known for being mischevious. The American Curl has a knack for mastering mischievous acts. One of her special talents? Opening doors, this includes turning doorknobs and cabinets. A word to the wise, If there’s a closed door within her reach, tuck your goods away elsewhere to keep them safe from prying paws. 6. This breed loves to be up high. She’s known to be a big fan of fetch and loves to fly high through the house. She’s also quite fond of perching on her human’s shoulders and assisting with kitchen duties. 7. An American Curl cat makes a great alarm clock alternative. The American Curl takes her job as wake-up caller very seriously. The moment that alarm rings, the American Curl rouses herself from sleep, kisses your nose, gives your eyelids a few pats and promptly begins licking your hair to ensure that you’re up and at ’em on time. No late arrivals to work on her watch. 8. This breed is a friend to all. Similar to a dog in terms of attentiveness, the American Curl is all about her humans, remaining faithful, loving and affectionate in any and all situations. American Curls aren’t inclined to be as vocal as other cats. Though boisterous in personality, the American Curl is quite the quiet kitty. The American Curl. The American Curl is one of the youngest cat breeds. It was born of a natural genetic mutation, that first appeared in Shulamith, a stray black kitten with long, silky hair and, strangely, ears that curled backward. She found her way to the welcoming door of Joe and Grace Ruga in Lakewood, California. The Rugas named her Shulamith after the “black and comely” princess in the Old Testament book the Song of Solomon. Shulamith had a litter of four kittens by an unknown father, and two of them shared her curly ears. A consultation with a geneticist, showed that the trait was caused by a dominant gene. Cat fanciers began selectively breeding the cats in 1983, and the new breed, named the American Curl, began to be registered by the Cat Fanciers Association in 1986. They were recognized by The International Cat Association in 1987, and achieved full recognition from CFA in 1993. The breed also stands out. for being the first single breed with two coat lengths recognized by CFA. All American Curls are descended from Shulamith. The cats can be bred to other Curls or outcrossed to non-pedigreed domestic cats with straight ears, that otherwise meet the Curl breed standard. This helps to ensure a large gene pool, and genetic diversity. The American Curl is a medium-size cat, weighing 5 to 10 pounds. The Curl stands out for his distinctively shaped ears, but even without them he is a striking cat with a sweet expression, and a silky coat that can be long or short and any color, including such exotic shades as chocolate tortoiseshell smoke, silver patched tabby and lilac lynx point. The longhaired variety has a pretty plumed tail. The ears, however, are the most intriguing characteristic. Straight when a kitten is born, they begin to curl back at two to 10 days after birth. They curl, uncurl and curl some more until reaching their permanent shape when a kitten is about 4 months old. A kitten destined for the show ring will have a crescent-shaped ear, with a minimum 90 degree arc of curl but no more than 180 degrees. The tips of the moderately large ears, are rounded and flexible, often adorned with tufts of fur. When Curls are alert, their ears swivel forward, but the tips point to the center of the base of the skull. The American Curl is sweet towards children, making them a good choice for families who has limited time supervising their children. Although it is ideal to monitor toddlers, who are not aware on how to pet the cat nicely, making sure that they don't pull the cat's ears or tail. The American Curl is happy to live with cat-friendly dogs, too, thanks to his amiable disposition. Introducing pets slowly and in controlled circumstances, is the best way to ensure that they learn to get along peacefully. Both pedigreed cats and mixed-breed cats have varying incidences of health problems that may be genetic in nature. American Curls are generally healthy, but some lines have problems with narrow ear canals, which can lead to ear infections from wax buildup. So it's a good idea, to always consult your local veterinarian about your cat's ear health.

When a brown tabby barn cat named Speedy produced a litter of kittens in The Dalles, Oregon, in 1982, one of them was bald, with tabby markings on her skin, and big ears that were spaced wide apart. She looked like a little alien from outer space. When her coat began to develop, she looked even more different: it was curly. And that was the name she was given by owner Linda Koehl. Curly eventually produced her own kittens by various males in the area, including a Siamese and a Manx. All of her kittens shared their mother’s curly coat, the result of a dominant mutation. The American Curl is one of the youngest cat breeds. The coat’s length and fullness may vary seasonally. It sometimes parts naturally down the middle of the back. Whatever the length, the LaPerm coat manifests in different ways. Kittens may be born hairless, with straight hair, or with curly hair. Both longhaired and shorthaired kittens can be born in the same litter.
