U.S. President Joe Biden renewed his call for a two-state solution to end the decades-long conflict between Israel and Palestinians, though he offered no new proposals to restart political dialogue as he met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday. However, Biden’s call for a two-state solution came as Abbas suggested time for such a solution may be running out. “The opportunity for a two-state solution on the 1967 borders may be available today, and it may not remain for a long time,” Abbas said. President Joe Biden has announced $100 million in multi-year U.S. assistance for east Jerusalem hospitals that serve Palestinians. On Friday, Biden is scheduled to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Some Palestinians say the meeting will serve both leaders’ political needs. “This visit for President Abbas will be a huge photo-op to show the world, and especially the Arab world and the Palestinian street, ‘Yes, here I am, I’m still alive and kicking.’ For Biden to show the midterm and the November [election] that, ‘Yes, we are taking care of the world and have issues to deal with and we are busy,’” says Dimitri Diliani, a Fatah leader and political activist. Ha riassunto così il New York Times la calorosa accoglienza ricevuta da Joe Biden nel primo viaggio in Israele da quando ha sostituito Trump alla Casa Bianca. Un viaggio in cui, durante gli incontri istituzionali col presidente Herzog e il premier Lapid, sul fronte del conflitto israelo palestinese Biden ha ribadito la sua convinzione della necessità della creazione di due Stati. Sul fronte nucleare iraniano, i due Paesi si sono impegnati a impedire che l'Iran adotti armi nucleari. Ci sono state anche proteste. Soprattutto di giornalisti e attivisti che oltre a chiedere a Biden di mettere Israele di fronte alle responsabilità dell'occupazione dei territori palestinesi, hanno domandato giustizia per la reporter di Al Jazeera Shireen Abu Akleh uccisa dall'esercito israeliano. "Spero che la sua eredità ispiri più giovani a svolgere il suo lavoro: riportare la verità e nel raccontare storie che troppo spesso vengono trascurate. Gli Stati Uniti continueranno a insistere perché si renda conto in modo chiaro e trasparente della sua morte.", ha detto Biden durante l'incontro col presidente palestinese Mahmud Abbas. La visita a Gerusalemme est e Betlemme ha concluso questa tappa del suo viaggio in Medio Oriente. Biden è poi ripartito dall'aeroporto di Tel Aviv sull'Air Force One per uno storico volo diretto verso l'Arabia Saudita.
