Bonham's surprisingly not-too-well-known French Style Buttery Smooth single stroke rolls. Think Danish TV Dazed and Confused & How Many More Times. I believe this is the patented first video ever made on this under-appreciated Bonham skill. Plus, FLUDAS shows some ACHILLES LAST STAND & WHOLE LOTTA LOVE Glory! * IMPORTANT LISTEN TO THE GLORIOUS SOUND of G's white-label 1960's Paiste Giant Beat hats. It is the ultimate sound sample of a great pair of original 15" Giant Beat hats.
This is kind of a "what if" video. I love the sound and feel of this Stainless Steel Ludwig kit so I thought it would be fun to record this song in the barn house. Here is the end result. Ivan, the guitarist from People's Front Of Zeppelin mixed the drums for me , and he added the Binson Echorec effect. I also am using Beyerdynamic M160's as overheads which is what Andy John's used on Bonzo's kit for the original recording. This video presents a close up of my bass drum work playing fast doubles, ala The Song Remains The Same Listen To This Eddie style, Achilles, Dazed and Confused live, Whole Lotta Love theramin jam, etc. This video corresponds to 14:11 to 17:26 in the MASH UP video just posted today. This presents a good look at how I play Bonham style duplets on the bass drum. I figured this would be a good basic reference for playing doubles on the bass drum since I don't have the know how yet to make split screen - multi-camera videos.

Song # 4 in my series of solo performances of tunes from a typical Zep 1977 tour setlist. They often played In My Time Of Dying in this slot so I will also be doing a cover of that as well soon. For this take I swapped out some of the Giant Beats seen in previous vids for some more era appropriate 70's 2002s...18, 20 crashes and 15 sound edge hats. The 24 is still the 60's Giant Beat. This tune is one of the easier ones to keep in my head as the form is fairly simple. This was the first and only take I attempted. Bonzo typically played a lot of very dramatic fills during Jimmy's solo and I tried to emulate some, but there are so many variants that are possible. I'm still experimenting with mic placement and levels so please bear with me. Hope you enjoy it! Terry and I will have many more geek out vids to come so stay tuned!
Getting my jojo fuel for the day. Thought I'd mix it up with an ON LOCATION. Some Zep drum covers on the way. Just in case, here is the link to the BONZOLOGY DRUM CHANNEL. Lots of NEW CONTENT COMING: 🤍
Poor Tom is one of the only , if not only Zep tune that Bonzo plays the same beat all the way through with no fills, or changes to the beat, or even cymbal crashes. The song has a similarity to Friends and I think its even in the same key and guitar tuning as Friends. There is a similarity to Gallows Pole but the bass drum figure is distinctly unique to this song. I think at one point I say the bass drum lick is followed by two more bass drum notes but that was incorrect, its ONE bass drum not and then the two snare rimshots on the and of beats 3 and 4. I love this unique beat, and its a rare example of Bonzo staying in the groove by playing the same pattern through an entire song. Thanks for the request...hope you all enjoy it!
As familiar and iconic as this song is, I think a lot of drummers miss the subtle ghosting throughout, especially in the final vocal verse, before the end. Thanks to Ivan Jakic of PFoZ for helping me with the drum mix. Please subscribe to PFoZ for the finest YouTube Zeppelin covers....🤍

Bonzo set the bar very high with his drumming on the first song of the debut album. What a beginning!! This is still one of the most challenging songs to play , not so much because of the bass drum triplets but because of the heavy interaction between the bass drum and left hand work across the snare , tom, and floor tom, all while playing a cowbell rhythm! Its such a unique groove , and its remarkable that he never really quite played a groove like this again, as far as I know. In this tune, the drum part is like a counter melody, it is that integral to the song !! The fact that he came up with a drum part so distinctive, so creative and challenging, at 20 years old, for their debut is still astounding to me. All the elements of his greatness are exemplified in this drum part....his great footwork, and funky sensibility with a groove, the syncopation between limbs, the beautiful, natural sounding drums, the way the beat follows the main riff...these are all trademarks of his style, his musical personality. I thought about doing some videos where I compare what a standard/typical rock drummer might play along with a Zep tune, as opposed to what Bonzo played, to illustrate how integral his drumming was to each song's character , but I suppose that's already been discussed well enough.
In My Time Of Dying from June 7 1977 at Madison Square Garden. This is a great version, especially for Bonzo. He doesn't play some of the usual fills, but I really like his improvisations and fills on this version. This is the last video I made with the borrowed Stainless Steel kit. I will be posting a full In Through The Outdoor album analysis video sometime in the coming months, which I recorded up at the barn with this kit! Here is the studio version of Black Dog. I'm going to try to get around to completing the 4th album in the coming weeks. I recently did When The Levee Breaks and last year I did Four Sticks ( which I think I'll re-do). I decided to use a second camera view for my bass drum pedal since I get a lot of requests for it, and I figured it works well for this song. There is more footwork going on than one might think...Bonzo's trademark power, subtlety and nuance. A note about the counting ... I truly have no idea how they recorded this. I just go by feel, and it took several tries to get these close. When they played it live , they had a system...basically the band came in on the 8th note after Plants last word. The stick clicks on the recording don't make any clear sense to me, they're not even or in time as far as I can tell. Must have been some kind of reference for them, but some are very close to the actual entrance, others are not . I used all vintage Paiste 602's for this video because they are correct to the era, and I think it sounds like Bonzo may have been playing them on this session. Hope you all dig it! I had to record this version on these tubs! This is the way it was played at the LA Forum on the legendary bootleg "Listen To This Eddie", recorded June 21 1977. Finally , a snare tuning video !! Terry asked me to tune his custom 6.5 x14 Ludwig Black Galaxy drum ...aka... his "Acrophonic" or "Blackcrolite" snare which he recently put Imperial style lugs and changed the badge to a Monroe Keystone. So, after our live chat , we got into the drum tuning. This is basically how I tune my snare. Hope it's of interest and helpful to some of you out there. Here is a redo of Fool In The Rain. Since I did my first video and demo of this tune I have upgraded my recording gear and I wanted to use the new Legacy kit for a new video. I also wanted to cover the various percussion parts that I hear, although I'm not so sure if I got everything right. It's pretty hard to hear the details in that samba section, but I think it's bells (maybe agogo), maracas/shaker of some sort, timbales and of course the whistle! Also, no marimba for me! I don't think Bonzo played it, it's likely that assignment fell to JPJ or maybe they hired a percussionist, but I am pretty confident Jonesy could've handled the job. Penultimate song in my series of 1973 tour style performances. I chose to do the last two songs ( encores ) from the June 2 1973 show at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco because they are both blazing hot versions, and they're recorded in good stereo soundboard quality. Zep often played either Communication Breakdown, or The Ocean as encores on the '73 tour, and on this occasion they played both . It's pretty incredible to hear how much stamina and fire, and heavy footwork Bonzo is delivering at the end of a nearly 3 hour show in the outdoor heat , in a stadium packed with 50,000 people! His bass drum playing on this track is very active! The Ocean is up next, and that will complete the run. Thanks for your support of the channel! Bonzo rules!

"I've seen the future and I left it behind" My quick cover of Supernaut by Black Sabbath. I've had several requests for this song so I did this one after recording another video today. Black Zeppelin. Apparently Bonzo had an affinity for this song and went by the studio when they were recording to jam on it, which according to Bill Ward, derailed their recording session for a bit. 😂 Zep and Sabbath jammed on at least one other occasion as well, playing through some original riffs, bluesy stuff....Robert and Geezer even started to write something together. Ward thinks it wasn't recorded, but Iommi says it was. It's not known where the tapes are, but maybe someday they'll surface. Iommi said Zep actually wanted to have Sabbath on Swan Song but it never panned out. I can see why Bonzo liked this one, it's a hell of a riff/groove and it's got a lot of fast footwork! According to Ward, he was playing it with two bass drums, but Bonzo said "I'll play it with one!" The drum /percussion break is really a killer! Second video covering the Danish BYEN TV/Radio recording from March 17 1969. This is a somewhat iconic performance, it's a very clear and well recorded documentation of the raw power and vitality of Zep in early 1969. FYI...I am using vintage A Zildjian 14 hats and 16 crash, and vintage Paiste 602 24 thin ride and 18 inch crash. I wanted to emulate the sizes Bonzo used in these early shows. I use a bass drum in this video to describe the basic and essential way to give a basic tuning to a drum-any drum. I used a bass drum here as it has the biggest surface area for the demonstration. As de-wrinkling of the head is a key component, a maximum diameter head surface is clearest to the camera (your viewpoint). This video describes how to get a basic full tuning out of a drum. The primary key is to DE-WRINKLE & SEAT the head on the "end of a cylinder" (the drum). I will later make a 'general tom tuning' video, as well as a 'general snare' video, as well as a beefy bass drum SOUND video (the specific tonality of a bass drum relies quite a bit on muffling techniques-both very minor to very heavy (i.e. a heavy blanket and cinderblock on the inside-which is done quite a bit-or used to be). Specifically or the bass drum, from this point (the goal of this video-a clean open tuning), applying various types & amount of muffling, whether felt strips, or pre-muffled heads, or a blanket, will refine the tone you desire, but will I leave that to a separate MUFFLING THE BASS DRUM video, which I will make subsequently. There are a few ways to do so, and each requires different materials-which will say is beyond the scope of this video, and for that point, conversely then WRINKLING the head can be useful!
This is the first of a series of videos devoted to analysing and demonstrating John Bonham's drum solo from the Royal Albert Hall concert video, from Jan 9 1970. In this video, I take a close look at the actual drum part to the melody, and the opening minutes of the solo. It is not meant to be a note for note literal transcription. The purpose here is to examine the ideas that Bonzo was working with, technically and conceptually. By understanding and utilizing some of the vocabulary of John Bonham, you will enrich your own language and concepts, which is really what all drummers should be aiming for when studying their influences. I'm not sure yet how many videos I will do on this solo, but I assume it will be around 4 to 6 total. My goal is to do one a week, but my skill at editing and producing these videos is fairly remedial. Hope you all dig it, and find it informative and helpful. Thanks for watching!!

Here is the studio version, with the Earl Palmer style doubled 8th notes on hihat and snare drum. If you don't know about Earl Palmer, look him up. A true King of Rock and Roll, and more, and an influence on Bonham as well as many other drummers....even if they didn't know who he was, because he often wasn't credited. I'm using all vintage Paiste 602 - (preserial number) cymbals here. It sounds to me like Bonzo used them on this album.
John Bonham's half time shuffle that he played on Fool In The Rain is along with Good Times Bad Times, When The Levee Breaks and Kashmir, one his his most famous and beloved drum beats. Its a beat that has its origin most likely in Bernard Purdie's famous "Purdie Shuffle" . This has become common knowledge , especially since the advent of YouTube , where there are many videos that discuss and analyze this beat. I don't believe there is any direct statement from Bonham or anyone else in the band that specifically mentions Purdie's beat being the inspiration , but it seems very likely that given the fact that Steely Dan's AJA had come out in 1977, (and this groove was played on Home At Last) , that Bonzo heard it, dug it, and wanted to utilize it, in some form. I wonder if this was one of those songs that came to be because of Bonzo's beat being played first?? The musical sections definitely have a latin feel especially when Bonzo goes to the bell of the ride cymbal and Page is playing a fingerpicking style Afro/Cuban type line. Then there is the nod to Brazil with the samba section which features more percussion ( marimba, cowbell, timbales)...yet another example of the great versatility of this band! I don't know of any earlier example of this beat being played although Purdie plays a similar beat on Mr Bojangles , from the King Curtis Live at The Fillmore album, but that song is in 6/4 time. This beat really has its roots in an African type of 12/8 rhythm, but with a back beat on beat three. Bonham definitely imparts his own sound and feel on this beat which is no small feat considering the iconic stature of 'The Hitmaker' Pretty Purdie!! IMO, this is the ultimate tribute of a musical giant to another .

An *extremely* crucial element of Bonham's drumming style. Moving the inside eighth note from the "&" to the 'an'. From the AND to the AN. From the AND to the LET. Know what I'm sayin'? Check George's recent BONZOLOGY Drum Channel video on his new video on Ghost Notes In Bonhamville.
This is a remix of my Dazed and Confused - The Song Remains The Same version which was originally posted in spring of 2018. I had originally posted it in two parts, but I decided to combine them into one video and remix the audio. It's a slight improvement, but a bit limited, because this was recorded when I only used two mics. Here is the original description : Next in the ongoing series of 1973 style drum covers....the big one!!! I was going to just play along with a boot version from 1973 but there are so many little moments where the tempos change, the fills are always slightly different etc that I decided to do TSRTS version, because I know it pretty well by memory. I used the actual film soundtrack version, not the old LP version , because it has some very nice bits that I wanted to cover, especially the moment before 'San Francisco'. A few things that were tricky...I had to let Bonzo do the hihat count in, after the bow solo because it's almost impossible to know when to start it. Also... the ah, ah, ah breaks are close but a little flammy. There are some parts that are the epitome of tight but loose too, where there was clearly some in the moment , head nod kind of interaction, especially going out of the guitar solo back to the triplets and break before the out head. Very elastic playing going on there! Lastly, I tried to approximate the unbelievably ferocious ending Bonzo played ...I brought the volume of the audio track down so there wouldn't be too many clashing notes. It's very close to what he played, but not note for note. Of course, he played it differently every night but that solo ranks as one of the greatest he ever played to close the song....IMO. Thanks for watching and please subscribe ! Also, subscribe to People's Front Of Zeppelin at 🤍youtube.com/peoplesfrontofzeppelin ...and follow us on Instagram, and Facebook. OK, I finally got around to continuing the series of 1973 style covers, the last one I did was Moby Dick several months back. This was probably the hardest video I've done so far. There is a lot to remember here with all the different grooves, and stop - starts etc! It's not note for note perfect but it's mostly correct. That first fill Bonzo plays when the vocals come in on Heartbreaker is really wicked and shows his speed and reflexes! He plays some rather unique fills in this version. I used the version of WLL from the original soundtrack because I think its a better edit than the 2007 remaster. There is some really amazingly drum and bass interaction during the theramin jam section , Jones and Bonzo are at their funkiest best. It was hard to predict and sync up exactly with certain parts which will be apparent, but I did my best....but I can always do better. PS ...hardcore Bonzo fans will notice a few little things I do that he did that aren't necessarily mistakes but ...omissions. Also, the part where he comes back in with the tymps after Jimmy's solo on Heartbreaker is very sketchy on the recording for about 8 bars ....they're a little out of sync and that part was hard to play over but I think it sounded OK.
I had a request to examine and demonstrate the ending solo Bonzo played on Rock And Roll from the Knebworth 8/4/79 concert. This video is primarily focused on that , but I also talk a little about how he played the solo on earlier tours. I demonstrate a couple different variations on the triplet theme that he most often favored for the solo. The Knebworth version is a little different from how he usually played it because he played cross-over triplets, ala Dazed and Confused (coming out of the guitar solo back into the out head) and Moby Dick (end of the drum solo ). It is truly an outstanding version from Bonzo, especially to have in good video quality. He plays eighth notes pretty much consistently throughout the whole song on the snare along with the hihat too. That's the real deal way to do it!
Second tune off HOTH I recorded today. I tuned the snare and toms up a bit tighter to approximate the higher pitch tuning that is evident on the record. This song is another prime example of Bonzo utilizing ghost notes on the snare and bass drum very dramatically. He had such an organic way of playing odd meter riffs, he leaves space and lets the groove breathe while still using so much heft and power , and its always funky ! The Doo-Wop shuffle walking bass bit at the end is a great example to the contrary of Ginger Baker's claim that Bonzo couldn't swing. Rubbish, he swings his ass off on that section and those fills are beauties.
Here is part 1 of a 3-part video for the studio recording of GALLOWS POLE (Gallow's Pole) from Led Zeppelin III. I don't mention in this video a particular accent he does earlier in the song in a big chorus (🤍2:30ish Hangman, Hangman upon your face a smile *BOOM *BOOM on the bassdrum), it's there-he does it once I believe if you're playing the song throw it in there-it punctuates the song nicely! I was so keen to explain the rest of the song I neglected to put that part in.
It's a long video, but but I believe it will be very helpful when learning Jeff Porcaro's famous drum shuffle beat from Toto's ROSANNA.
