How do you clone yourself or anyone in Final Cut Pro X?The methods I’m showing here also work in other video editing applications. The not so good method is by simply using a green screen. It is not recommended, because it’s more visible and looks not as good as using other methods. But if one subject (clone) is covering or overlapping the other clone, there’s no other choice. Also if you have a simple movie editor like iMovie which supports green screens but not masks then that’s also your only option. This method is straightforward in that you overlay the green screen image on top of the other like any other green screen effect. For the other 2 methods, you need to make sure you follow a few rules: 1 - you must put your camera on a tripod, shoot all the scenes with all the clones in 1 take, and make sure the camera doesn’t move at all during that time. If the camera moves a tiny bit, it will be a nightmare to align the different pieces together. Even starting and stopping filming will move the camera a little bit and therefore you must film it all at once. 2 - if you can control your lighting, that’s the best, otherwise, if you use sunlight, you will get changes in color between adjacent scenes. 3 - if you can lock the focus that’s also better otherwise you may get slight camera movement. Now on to the 2nd method to clone people: if you can film with something in your scene which cuts the image in the middle, top-to-bottom, in a pretty vertical way like a street lamp or something similar then you can put one clip on top of the other and crop the top image vertically until you reach that item that splits the image. You can do this also without such an item, but then the seem between the two scenes will be more visible. The best method is to use a mask with multiple masking points. It’s the best to use a scene where there’s lots going on in the background (but static) because then you could have your mask run along existing lines in your environment and then those seems will not be visible. With this method you can easily add more clones to the movie. In each method you will need to align the different clips so that they are timed correctly. It’s important when you film to plan ahead and know exactly what each clone is going to do or say such that the others will also play their reaction correctly. But if you didn’t time it exactly, I like to fix the timing by using the Blade Speed feature in FCPX where I can change the timing of the part of the clone which is not talking right now to match the one that is.I often also use markers that I put on each clip to correctly align a moment in the different clips that have to occur at the same time. If the sunlight caused changes in the color between adjacent clips, normally when a mask line goes between objects in the background, you may not see the change in color or you may see it, but it may not be a problem at all. It will be a problem when the mask line goes straight through a blank area of a single color such as a blank wall. In that case there will be a need to correct the color of one of the two. In some cases, correcting the color will be fine for one area, but not for another area of the same seem. In that case you’ll need to add a second color correction, but this use a shape mask to only correct that second area without affecting the area that was fine with the first color correction. If you need 2 clones to be at the same spot in the image, but at different times, for example: one clone comes out of a door and moves to the side while the other clone comes from the other side and then goes into the same door. So both need to go through the same door, but not together. In that case you need to keyframe your masking points and move the mask at the right time to show both clones at the right place. Add a freeze frame sequence, or a clone effect to your video. This effect does not require any plugins or masking. Some things to keep in mind when shooting footage to apply to this freeze frame sequence. Number one, is your camera must be perfectly still, so I’d highly recommend using a tripod. Number two, is using a higher frame rate, your freeze frames will have less motion blur and be much sharper. And number three, is to use the method I'm going to show you today, you must have a dark subject against a light background. After video is loaded into FCPX, grab a couple freeze frames from your sequence, and use Final Cut Pro's Darken blend mode to layer your clips. When you select darken blend mode, instead of displaying the layer on top, Final Cut Pro compares the color values of each pixel from the selected layer, and the layer below it, and displays the one thats darker. Another way to achieve this freeze frame sequence/clone effect, is by applying a mask to the freeze frame clips, but that itself is a subject for another video. As long as you have a light background and a dark subject, this is a much easier and quicker way to achieve this effect.
