Building with cordwood is a good option if you have a great deal of timber that is not large enough, or straight enough for typical log home construction. On our new farm site we have a good bit of cottonwood that is perfect for this purpose. This video details my method if building non-load bearing walls as in-fill in a timber frame. Go to our Natural Building Blog where we answer questions. 🤍 There are a lot of little details you can search on the Internet. This is just a basic introductory video to show you the cordwood/earthbag concept. What I like to do is have the mortar recessed slightly. It looks a little better if the wood is protruding slightly. You smooth this out. The mix is very similar it's basically cob. You could also call it earthen mortar. Here is my general impression of cordwood construction. It's extremely beautiful. It's very practical in certain areas where you have an abundant wood supply. But it's very labor intensive. Earthbag is several times faster. So it's very slow. What I would recommend for most people is maybe just use it around a doorway, an entryway, because it's very beautiful. Maybe around your fireplace, something like this, because it's very beautiful. You can search the Internet and see some really beautiful examples of cordwood construction.

🤍 Matt of Feral Farm shows a tiny house made of cordwood. This off grid house is also a round house. Matt talks about the issues of cordwood contrstruction, plus issues with round house construction. Matt explains that one of the perks of cordwood construction is that once the thermal mass is heated, it will hold the heat for a day. The biggest downside for cordwood is that as the wood dries, it shrinks. So gaps tend to form between the wood and the mortar - thus allowing wind to pass through the structure in hundreds of gaps. Or the wood cracks and provides a differend kind of gap. The solution is to use only thoroughly dried cordwood. This structure shows the benefit of using using thoroughly dried cordwood. Matt has done a great job of reusing materials that otherwise would have been thrown away. Complete with a micro kitchen and a wood stove. The base under the stove is an old chalkboard! Most of the wood cut from trees can't be used to make finished lumber / boards. Often times it's turned into firewood. You can use firewood to build strong structures. The pieces of wood are stacked and mortar is put between the layers, like a brick wall. 🤍

Building a CORDWOOD house

Walls are usually constructed such that the pieces of wood are "proud" of (protrude from) the mortar by a small amount (an inch or less). Walls typically range between 12 and 24 inches thick, though in northern Canada, some walls are as much as 36 inches thick. Cordwood homes are attractive for their visual appeal, maximization of interior space (with a rounded plan), economy of resources, and ease of construction. Wood usually accounts for about 40- 60% of the wall system, the remaining portion consisting of a mortar mix and insulating fill.[1] Cordwood construction can be sustainable depending on design and process. There are two main types of Cordwood Construction, Throughwall and M-I-M (mortar-insulation-mortar). In Throughwall, the mortar mix itself contains an insulative material, usually sawdust, chopped newsprint, or paper sludge, in sometimes very high percentages by mass (80% paper sludge/20% mortar). In the more common M-I-M, and unlike Brick or Throughwall masonry, the mortar does not continue throughout the wall. Instead, three- or four-inch (sometimes more) beads of mortar on each side of the wall provide stability and support, with a separate insulation between them. Cordwood walls can be load-bearing (using built-up corners, or curved wall designed) or laid within a post and beam framework which provides structural reinforcement and is suitable for earthquake-prone areas. As a load-bearing wall, the compressive strength of wood and mortar allows for roofing to be tied directly into the wall. Different mortar mixtures and insulation fill material both affect the wall's overall R value, or resistance to heat flow; and conversely, to its inherent thermal mass, or heat/cool storage capacity. History Remains of cordwood structures still standing date back as far as one thousand years in northern Greece and Siberia. However, more contemporary versions could be found in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. There are no detailed information about the origins of cordwood construction. However, it is plausible that forest dwellers eventually erected a basic shelter between a fire and a stacked wood pile.[2] In the work of William Tischler of University of Wisconsin, he states that "current" cordwood probably started in the late 1800s (decade) in Quebec, Wisconsin, and Sweden. He believes that the technique started in these areas around the same time.[3] The technique had a brief period of popularity in the northern United States during the Great Depression, mostly due to its inexpensive materials and ease of construction, leading to it being called "Depression Housing" in parts of Wisconsin, Vermont, and Upstate New York. Wood Cordwood construction is an economical use of log ends or fallen trees in heavily timbered areas. Other common sources for wood include sawmills, split firewood, utility poles (without creosote), split rail fence posts, and logging slash. It is more sustainable and often economical to use recycled materials for the walls. Regardless of the source, all wood must be debarked before the construction begins. While over 30 different types of wood can be used, the most desirable rot resistant woods are Pacific yew, bald cypress (new growth), cedars, and juniper. Acceptable woods also include Douglas fir, western larch, Eastern White Pine, and Spruce Pine. Less dense and more airy woods are superior because they shrink and expand in lower proportions than dense hardwoods. Most wood can be used in a wall if it is dried properly and stabilized to the external climate's relative humidity. Furthermore, logs of identical species and source are preferred because they limit expansion/contraction variables. MortarMusic, Art, Film, Authors, History, Transportation and the Sciences 🤍

Round Cordwood outhouse

Cordwood seemed an obvious choice to apply, as we have plenty of left over cut-off wood, sawdust from cutting the wood for the house, and sand from digging the well. This means that most of the building materials were already there. In fact, we only bought a bag of lime and a bag of Portland cement. Sand, sawdust, lime and cement together make the mortar suitable for the cordwood technique. It is perfect to use for round structures, as is planned for this outhouse (outdoor toilet). The video on the whole toilet from start (bushes) to finish will follow when it is all completed. For now, a little glimpse of my initial attempt with using cordwood. So far, it seems to work very well. Note, I'm no expert and this is no tutorial - only a description of what I did (time will tell whether it holds up!).
