In this film, the GP is seeing a patient who has a depressive disorder. The patient describes symptoms including low mood, tearfulness, reduced energy, reduced motivation, early morning wakening, loss of appetite, weight loss, poor concentration, reduced enjoyment and reduced interest in self-care. The GP explores the effect of the symptoms on other people in the patient's life, explores the past history of low mood, and makes an assessment of suicide risk. The GP then gives the patient an explanation of depression. Please note that this video has been made by the University of Nottingham for teaching purposes. The psychiatrist is a real psychiatrist but the patient is played by an actor.

NOTE FROM TED: This talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, contains assertions about treating depression based on the speaker's own theory. While some viewers might find the prescriptions to be helpful, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: 🤍 Dr. Heitler discusses a treatment for situational depression (even when we don't know it is situational!) WITHOUT psychopharmacology. Instead, she offers three prescriptions without pills, outlining these prescriptions using an example from her practice. She shows how investigating what makes us angry or upset can help us to re-empower ourselves, and our mental health. Susan Heitler, Ph.D., a Harvard and NYU-educated clinical psychologist, writes a Psychology Today blog that has received over 7.5 million reads. Dr. Heitler first earned recognition when her book From Conflict to Resolution brought understandings of collaborative conflict resolution from the world of legal and business mediation to the practice of psychotherapy. Her Power of Two and Power of Two Workbook– published in six foreign language editions–plus her interactive marriage education website PowerOfTwoMarriage.com, teach the communication skills for marriage success. Dr. Heitler’s most recent book and website combo, Prescriptions Without Pills, offers self-help versions of the techniques she uses in her clinical practice–techniques for relieving depression, anger, and anxiety plus strategies for sustaining well-being. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍

This video showcases Ellie's battle with depression.
Sorry, but somebody had to say it. This video focuses on mood depression, not clinical depression. Furthermore, this is not a purported “cure” for depression. This is a call to live in reality, you own depression, depression does not own you. The Sapir Whorf Hypothesis, and General Semantics have illustrated how our words can become our prisons. The labels “Disorder” “Disease” “Depressed,” when internalized, can create a reality filled with suffering that extends beyond the biochemical. Don't get me wrong, "Chemical Imbalances" are real, but that can be a gross oversimplification of what's going on. There's a great article called "Moving Beyond ‘Chemical Imbalance’ Theory of Depression" from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (🤍 that I encourage everyone to read. BE explores the inner dialogue of depression and anxiety and how pain can be used for purpose when we choose to seek light amidst darkness. The contrasting inner senses of panic and peace are conveyed through the sensory elements of sound and lighting. This is important especially in today's current events, and the issue of injustice that has existed for far too long. Watch it through the lens of mental health. Then watch it through the lens of the oppressed. It is the same narrative. We have a longing for hope in our world. Mentally and physically. We hope this inspires and helps you as much as it has for us. If you are struggling with these issues and are in need of help, please reach out to someone. You are not alone. "The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality, and it was vitality that seemed to seep away from me in that moment." In a talk equal parts eloquent and devastating, writer Andrew Solomon takes you to the darkest corners of his mind during the years he battled depression. That led him to an eye-opening journey across the world to interview others with depression only to discover that, to his surprise, the more he talked, the more people wanted to tell their own stories. (Filmed at TEDxMet.) The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Only 30 percent of depressed teens are being treated. Symptoms of teenage depression can include, but not limited to: prolonged low mood or sadness, being easily irritable, feelings of helplessness, increased social isolation, loss of interest for things previously enjoyed. The signs of depression can resemble that of clinical depression. If you identify with the symptoms in the video, we recommend talking to your school counsellors or free resources.
