Why Dune Worked where Blade Runner 2049 Failed | One v One

Get 31-37% off ALL posters on Displate's site all the way until November 13th (discount applies automatically at checkout): 🤍 After Blade Runner 2049 flopped at the box office in 2017 and lost millions of dollars, Warner Bros and Legendary are back with director Denis Villeneuve to make another big blockbuster sci-fi epic adaptation, 2021's Dune. Fortunately it is actually performing better, even in a tougher market and even though it's also on HBO Max. So in today's episode of One Versus One, let's compare Dune to Blade Runner 2049 (and the blockbuster weaknesses we identified about it in the video "Blade Runner 2049 — Why Great Movies Fail | Anatomy Of A Failure"), to see what it does differently to have become more financially successful. They're both great movies, but let's find a few key reasons why Dune is a more successful blockbuster that more general audiences can get into. I mean it even got a sequel Dune Part Two announced! I watched Dune and felt nothing... | Video Essay

Get Surfshark VPN ➡️ 🤍 and enter promo code filmspeak for 83% off and 3 extra months for free! In this FIlmSpeak video essay I explain how I watched Dune and felt nothing... Frank Herbert's Dune has often been considered unadaptable due how dense the source material is and how the previous adaptations have failed to properly capture essence of the Dune novel. With Dune (2021) or Denis Villeneuve Dune, Denis Villeneuve comes to the property as not only one of the finest filmmakers working today, but a lifelong fan of the material and someone who we can trust to make a truly great Dune movie...or so we hoped. While Villeneuve is undoubtedly a fan and has a genuine love for Herbert's novel, the new Dune movie feels like it barely scratches the surface when introducing us to the world and establishing the characters. For a book that is rich with detail, and for a film that is immaculately crafted and performed, it lacks the very texture that makes fantasy franchises like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and even Star Wars stick. Is Dune a bad movie? No, it's fine, but it could've and should've been great, except for Hans Zimmer who's Dune soundtrack is arguably career best material. Dune is directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista and Stellen Skarsgard. In the far future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides accepts the stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, "melange" (known as "spice"), a drug that extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and makes faster-than-light travel practical. Though Leto knows the opportunity is an intricate trap set by his enemies, he takes his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisors to Arrakis. Leto takes control of the spice mining operation, which is made perilous by the presence of giant sandworms. A bitter betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert. The film covers roughly the first half of the book, through Paul's meeting with Chani and his victory in a Fremen ritual duel with Jamis, events that Paul had seen in previous visions representing the end of his life as Paul Atreides and the start of his life as "Paul Muad'Dib", the Fremen messiah. EXPLAINING DUNE’S IMAGERY: We Are Only So Great As Our Symbols | An In-depth Analysis

Dune is a layered and symbolically rich novel, and Denis Villeneuve's new adaptation is as sophisticated as Frank Herbert's original work. In this video, I peel back some of the layers to mine the depths of meaning underneath both. Dune is a 2021 science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, and Eric Roth. Based on the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, it follows Paul Atreides and his family, the noble House Atreides, as they are thrust into a war with the Harkonnens for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. Why should you read “Dune” by Frank Herbert? - Dan Kwartler

Discover Frank Herbert’s science fiction classic, “Dune,” which tells the story of a man catapulted into the middle of a planetary revolution. A mother and son trek across an endless desert. Wearing special suits to dissipate heat and recycle moisture, the travelers aren’t worried about dying of thirst. Their fears are much greater. Soon, the sound of the desert is drowned out by a hissing: a mound of sand 400 meters long bursts from the desert floor and races towards them. This is the world of “Dune.” Dan Kwartler dives into the epic story. Lesson by Dan Kwartler, directed by Recircle. What's The Point of Dune? The Key Themes of The Dune Saga

SPOILER ALERT. This video is for Fedaykin ONLY! Dune 2020 is happening. There has been an onslaught of new photos of the movie and the set. So far everything looks pretty epic and a whole new wave of excitement has been ignited for this movie and the Dune series as a whole. Before we get started if you wanted detailed breakdowns of Dune lore check out my Ultimate Guide to Dune Videos which can be found in the playlist on my channel front page. So far I’ve covered the first 6 original Frank Herbert Dune Books and I’m currently working on the final video in the series. Many people are talking about Dune right now, which is great because I think it’s one of the greatest and certainly one of the most influential Science Fiction Sagas of all time. But Dune is also very complicated not only narratively often, but thematically as well. So in this video I will do my very best to break down some of the key themes of the series. First however, we have to briefly talk about the setting of the Dune Universe and its social and political structure! Alright, So Dune takes place in the year 10190 AG. This is about 20,000 years in our future. The Epoch AG stands for After Guild. The guild is significant enough to be used as a marker of time because the guild provided a means for safe faster than light travel between worlds, which effectively unified the imperium. You’ve probably heard that the Dune universe runs on a substance called spice. That is true, the Planet Arrakis, also known as Dune is the only planet in the known universe where the spice Melange can be found. The spice is a substance that extends life, heightens awareness, in some it can lead to prescient vision, and it is also essential to space travel. Oh and one last thing, the spice is highly addictive to the point that once you become addicted you must continue taking it otherwise the withdrawals will kill you. The Empire is maintained by a balance of power between the Emperor, The Noble Great Houses of the Landsraad, The Spacing Guild, and The Highly Secretively, Highly Manipulative, ever adapting Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. The Bene Gesserit sisterhood are key to the essential plot lines of Dune. For thousands of years they’ve been attempting to create The Kwisatz Haderach. The Kwisatz Haderach would be a man trained in their ways possessing all of their powers and more. But Ultimately their plans are thrown off when the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, who was given the task of bearing daughters only to the Duke Atreides, chose to give birth to a son instead. Jessica trained her son Paul in the Bene Gesserit way. The result was a Kwisatz Haderach born a generation too soon. Paul was not bound under Bene Gesserit conditioning, they could not control him. Inadvertently through their own hubris they unleashed a super being unto the universe and the eventual results would be devastating and long lasting. Alright so now that we’ve gotten all of that out of the way it’s time to get to the main topic of this video. What are the key themes of the Dune Saga? I HAVE A NEW BOOK! DUNE PART 2: The Best Character Arc In Cinema History (Video Essay)

Dune Part 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Dune Part 1 which was directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and Jason Momoa. Dune Part 2 is set to premiere later this year and in this video essay I break down why Timothee Chalamet's character Paul Atreides is the perfect representation of young people, and how we can all learn from the character of Paul Atreides and how he had to ignore his mind and push himself to achieve greatness. As I believe we all have dreams and aspirations yet we allow our minds to get in the way, however from taking the example of Timothee Chalamet's character Arc in Dune we can learn ways to overcome this, and the strength that comes with it. Timothee Chalamet has appeared in many film in the last five years, from Call me By Your Name directed by Luca Guadagnino, as well as another Guadagnino film coming up 'Bones And All', to Little Women alongside Saoirse Ronan and directed by Greta Gerwig. To Dune Part 1 alongside Zendaya. However none of these films are as important as Dune Part 2 will be for his career, as Dune Part 2 will be entirely riding on his performance, and if Timothee Chalamet delivers it will definitely cement his spot among the Hollywood greats and legends of the acting game. Why do some people consider Frank Herbert's Dune hard to read? In this video, I examine Herbert's writing to determine why Dune is a difficult book. If you have anything to add (or if you disagree), leave a comment. I'll respond to as many as I can. #dune #book #frankherbert #herbert #analysis #writing #videoessay #reading

Why Paul is Not the Hero of Dune

Hey, guys, it’s Quinn’s Ideas here and it’s time for another quick discussion video on the Dune Saga. *SPOILERs Video is for deep desert dwellers ONLY! I realize that I say a bunch on this channel that Paul Atreides is not the hero of the Dune saga. I've given specific reasons why I believe this is the case throughout several of my videos but I've never done a dedicated video addressing It. And since I often see questions and contentions regarding this idea I thought I would respond and elaborate here. At this point, after rereading the saga many times now I am pretty convinced that this is the way that Frank Herbert intended the character to be viewed within the context of the whole series. As always if you're interested in learning more about the Dune series please subscribe, and definitely check out the Dune playlist on the front of this channel! To start off we have to look at what Frank Herbert had to say about his own series. To quote Herbert "I wrote the dune saga because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with the warning label 'may be dangerous to your health.'" Herbert is definitely referring to his character Paul Atreides. In the book, Dune Paul is able to become the leader of the Fremen. And unseat the emperor of the Known Universe. Upon first look, Dune appears to follow the classic Hero’s Journey Archetype but by examining the book further and by diving into the further books in the series the truth becomes clearer. In the subtext of Dune, hidden beneath the main plot involving the reascension of house Atreides is something far darker than people who are casually aware of Dune may not realize. To understand this we must first take a look at the way in which Paul is able to rise amongst the Fremen and eventually become their Messiah. I HAVE A NEW BOOK! How DUNE PART 2 Will Save Modern Cinema (Video Essay)

Dune Part 1 starring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and Jason Momoa, was a great success both critically and at the box office. And I believe Denis Villeneuve will have an even bigger impact with Dune Part 2. In this video essay I break down why I think Dune part 2 is needed in Hollywood, and how saved modern cinema. We have been in a little bit of a rut when it comes to modern blockbuster movies, but Dune takes it back to the days of blockbusters being intelligent, artistic and overall great films. Why IMAX Beat 3D | A Video Essay (sorta) About DUNE

What is IMAX? What’s the difference between 70mm film IMAX and digital? What’s the difference between IMAX and 3D? Is 3D any good? Well, this video essay was supposed to be about Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, but instead it ended up tackling the question of why IMAX beat 3D, and is becoming an increasingly powerful creative tool. Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay, JJ Abrams, James Cameron, the Mission Impossible and James Bond movies all use 70mm IMAX film to create astounding visuals that provide the ultimate immersive experience – a stark contrast from the dying fad that is 3D. * 00:00 – Not quite a Dune video essay 01:07 – Avatar and 3D 02:04 – Why 3D movies don't work 05:08 – What is IMAX, and why is it better? 06:38 – What is IMAX 3D? 08:42 – Christopher Nolan and IMAX 09:14 – DUNE (2021) * I talk about movies and stuff on Twitter: 🤍twitter.com/PentexP If you want to see more video essays about Dune and other movies then please subscribe and let me (and the algorithm) know you liked it! * SOURCES AND FURTHER READING Box office statistics: 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 Christopher Nolan interview on 3D: 🤍 LieMAX and scaling up high resolution images: 🤍 🤍 The difference between IMAX film and digital: 🤍 🤍 🤍 Other sources 🤍 🤍 What is IMAX? 🤍 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Production Video #4 🤍 Transformers: The Last Knight IMAX® 3D Featurette 🤍 Star Trek Into Darkness: IMAX® Behind the Frame 🤍 Star Wars: The Force Awakens IMAX® Behind the Frame 🤍 TENET- Behind the Scenes Exclusive 🤍 For the Love of Film – Interstellar IMAX® Featurette 🤍 DUNE (2021) | Behind the Scenes & Interviews 🤍

In this video, I give a comprehensive and detailed introduction to the DUNE Universe created by Frank Herbert and also give a guide to the books in the DUNE Saga (the Original six Dune Books by Frank Herbert, the Expanded Dune Books by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, and even the Dune Encyclopedia by Dr. William E. McNelly). I discuss the Butlerian Jihad, the rise of different factions, groups and organisations such as the Mentats, the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, and much more.
