Frank Herbert's Dune has often been considered unadaptable due how dense the source material is and how the previous adaptations have failed to properly capture essence of the Dune novel. With Dune (2021) or Denis Villeneuve Dune, Denis Villeneuve comes to the property as not only one of the finest filmmakers working today, but a lifelong fan of the material and someone who we can trust to make a truly great Dune movie...or so we hoped. Dune part 1 was an incredible film that did very well at both the box office and critically. Dune starred Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and Jason Mamoa and was directed by Denis Villeneuve. First however, we have to briefly talk about the setting of the Dune Universe and its social and political structure! Alright, So Dune takes place in the year 10190 AG. This is about 20,000 years in our future. The Epoch AG stands for After Guild. The guild is significant enough to be used as a marker of time because the guild provided a means for safe faster than light travel between worlds, which effectively unified the imperium. You’ve probably heard that the Dune universe runs on a substance called spice. That is true, the Planet Arrakis, also known as Dune is the only planet in the known universe where the spice Melange can be found. The spice is a substance that extends life, heightens awareness, in some it can lead to prescient vision, and it is also essential to space travel. Oh and one last thing, the spice is highly addictive to the point that once you become addicted you must continue taking it otherwise the withdrawals will kill you. The Empire is maintained by a balance of power between the Emperor, The Noble Great Houses of the Landsraad, The Spacing Guild, and The Highly Secretively, Highly Manipulative, ever adapting Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. The Bene Gesserit sisterhood are key to the essential plot lines of Dune. For thousands of years they’ve been attempting to create The Kwisatz Haderach. The Kwisatz Haderach would be a man trained in their ways possessing all of their powers and more. But Ultimately their plans are thrown off when the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, who was given the task of bearing daughters only to the Duke Atreides, chose to give birth to a son instead. Jessica trained her son Paul in the Bene Gesserit way. The result was a Kwisatz Haderach born a generation too soon. Paul was not bound under Bene Gesserit conditioning, they could not control him. Inadvertently through their own hubris they unleashed a super being unto the universe and the eventual results would be devastating and long lasting. Hey, guys, it’s Quinn’s Ideas here and it’s time for another quick discussion video on the Dune Saga. *SPOILERs Video is for deep desert dwellers ONLY! I realize that I say a bunch on this channel that Paul Atreides is not the hero of the Dune saga. I've given specific reasons why I believe this is the case throughout several of my videos but I've never done a dedicated video addressing It. And since I often see questions and contentions regarding this idea I thought I would respond and elaborate here. At this point, after rereading the saga many times now I am pretty convinced that this is the way that Frank Herbert intended the character to be viewed within the context of the whole series. As always if you're interested in learning more about the Dune series please subscribe, and definitely check out the Dune playlist on the front of this channel! To start off we have to look at what Frank Herbert had to say about his own series. To quote Herbert "I wrote the dune saga because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with the warning label 'may be dangerous to your health.'" Herbert is definitely referring to his character Paul Atreides. In the book, Dune Paul is able to become the leader of the Fremen. And unseat the emperor of the Known Universe. Upon first look, Dune appears to follow the classic Hero’s Journey Archetype but by examining the book further and by diving into the further books in the series the truth becomes clearer. In the subtext of Dune, hidden beneath the main plot involving the reascension of house Atreides is something far darker than people who are casually aware of Dune may not realize. To understand this we must first take a look at the way in which Paul is able to rise amongst the Fremen and eventually become their Messiah. I HAVE A NEW BOOK!
