Las masas de nubes sobre la selva amazónica contienen más agua que el mismo río Amazonas. Cuando estos "ríos voladores" llegan a los Andes, son empujados hacia el Sur y se precipitan en forma de lluvia sobre las ciudades de Sudamérica. La selva amazónica es inmensa y se extiende por varios países. Es considerada el pulmón verde de la Tierra y es una de las regiones con mayor diversidad. El precioso ecosistema de esta zona forestal, de varios cientos de miles de años de antigüedad, desempeña un papel fundamental en el equilibrio climático mundial: miles de millones de árboles absorben dióxido de carbono y liberan oxígeno. Además, el océano verde es también la mayor reserva de agua dulce del mundo. Es de esperar que el agua escasee en el futuro y se convierta en un recurso tan codiciado como lo fue el petróleo en el siglo XX. Por eso es tan importante conocer con precisión los ciclos del agua. Hace 20 años, el científico brasileño Antonio D. Nobre acuñó el término "ríos voladores" para definir las masas de agua que circulan en las nubes de lluvia sobre Sudamérica. Investigó incansablemente su funcionamiento y el complejo papel de la selva tropical en la regulación del clima. Su trabajo se centró en dos grandes cuestiones: ¿Por qué no hay desiertos en Sudamérica, mientras que en las mismas latitudes en África y Australia existen decenas de ellos? ¿Y por qué los vientos que soplan del hemisferio norte pueden cruzar aquí el ecuador, que es una barrera infranqueable en cualquier otro lugar de la Tierra? Para encontrar respuestas a estas preguntas, el profesor Nobre recurrió a la teoría de la "bomba biótica" desarrollada por dos físicos rusos. Según esta, los bosques crean una presión negativa que atrae el aire húmedo hacia el interior con una gran fuerza de absorción, lo que garantiza más lluvias. Este importante descubrimiento pone patas arriba los hallazgos científicos previos. The cloud masses above the Amazon rainforest contain more water than the Amazon itself. When these "flying rivers" hit the Andes they are pushed south and rain down over the cities of South America. The Amazon rainforest is immense, stretching across several countries. Considered the green lung of the earth, it is one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity in the world. The precious ecosystem of this forest area, which is several hundred thousand years old, plays a central role in maintaining the global climate’s delicate balance. Here, billions of trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This ‘green ocean‘ also constitutes the world's largest freshwater reserve. In the future, water is expected to become scarce. It may well become as sought-after a resource as oil was in the 20th century. That's why it's so important to have a thorough understanding of water cycles. Twenty years ago, Brazilian scientist Antonio D. Nobre coined the term "flying rivers" to refer to the masses of water that circulate in the rain clouds over South America. He tirelessly researched how they function and gained insights into the complex role played by the rainforest in climate regulation. His investigations focused on two major questions: Why are there no deserts in South America, while dozens of them exist at the same latitudes in Africa and Australia? And why can the winds blowing from the northern hemisphere cross the equator which is an insurmountable barrier everywhere else on earth here? To find answers to these questions, Prof. Nobre investigated what’s known as the biopump theory, developed by two Russian physicists. This theory states that forests create negative pressure that draws moist air inland with great suction, which then ensures further rain. This fundamental discovery turns earlier scientific findings on their head. The war in Ukraine is being watched very carefully in Georgia. In 2008, Russian forces took control of two breakaway regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In the footsteps of the traffickers in Mauritania who profit from poverty. They organize crossings to take west Africans to Europe. Are they helping these people on a dangerous journey or are they the heirs of the slave traders of the 16th century, at the time of the transatlantic slave trade? In the 16th century, slave trade decimated much of West Africa, causing long-lasting devastation and disruption. 21st century migration out of Africa seems to be following a similar path. At the center of both are the people who benefit financially - slave catchers of old and fixers nowadays. Abdourahmane is a Mauritanian fixer. He takes us to the inside of his business as he organizes a boat to take group of youth across the Atlantic to Europe. The boat will be navigated by his namesake, Abdourahmane, who is an experienced captain. He is aware of the risks to his own life on a small boat that will cross the ocean. The film draws parallels, highlighting similarities and differences and asking the questions: Why is this taking place today? Are the experiences and results the same? On the one hand is the involuntary migration of slaves in shackles being forced to Western countries. Today, voluntary migration to Western countries leads to exploitation as cheap labor. A policeman in Germany was injured after shots were fired during one of the operations against the Reichsbürger movement, which was said to have been planning a coup against the German government. The movement consists of a diffuse set of groups that do not recognize the authority of the German state. La taiga o bosque boreal es un ecosistema casi deshabitado que se extiende a lo largo del trayecto del Ferrocarril Transiberiano. Muchos asentamientos pequeños no son accesibles por carretera. Todos los meses, el cartero de la taiga, Andrian Kromov, de 53 años, realiza el peligroso viaje de 150 km a través de los pantanos para repartir correo, artículos de primera necesidad y noticias en aldeas remotas. En verano lo hace a caballo. Pero los caminos están en parte inundados o destruidos por los incendios forestales. El viaje es siempre una aventura. Y esta vez su caballo se escapó. Puede recorrer los primeros kilómetros en su viejo auto, pero esto tampoco suele funcionar. No le queda más remedio que intentar encontrar un caballo... o caminar. Los pueblos que por los que pasa en su viaje de una semana por la taiga están aislados del mundo. Siberia está muy poco poblada. La mayoría de los habitantes ha sido reubicada en granjas colectivas. Pero ya no queda ninguna. Hay una estación meteorológica, cuyos datos también retransmite Andrian, porque aquí no hay teléfono, ni internet, ni electricidad. La televisión y la radio funcionan con baterías o un generador. Esto requiere gasolina, que solo se puede transportar en invierno cuando el suelo está congelado. TikTok's chief executive, Shou Zi Chew, told US lawmakers on Thursday that the app's China-based parent company, ByteDance, would not be manipulated by any government. He was testifying before Congress, trying to sway lawmakers not to ban the short video app or force its sale to new owners. Western officials have become increasingly concerned that China's government has links to the app that it could use for espionage or to push propaganda to its hundreds of millions of global users. The US, the European Commission, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom have already ordered officials to delete TikTok from their phones. German Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger landed in Taipei on Tuesday, making her the first sitting cabinet official to visit Taiwan in decades. To kick off the two-day visit, Stark-Watzinger signed a bilateral deal with self-governing Taiwan regarding science and technology. "It's a great pleasure and honor for me to be the first minister heading a specialist government department to visit Taiwan in 26 years," Stark-Watzinger said in the Taiwanese capital. The decision to visit Taiwan comes amid tensions with mainland China. Beijing denies Taiwanese sovereignty and has signaled that it could take over the island. China said it filed a diplomatic complaint with Germany regarding the visit. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Wenbin told reporters in Beijing that Germany "immediately stop associating and interacting with Taiwan independence separatist forces and immediately stop using the Taiwan issue to interfere in China's internal affairs." German politicians, along with officials from other countries such as the US, have been visiting Taiwan in recent months to express solidarity, amid fears that China could launch an invasion of the island. Germany does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China rejects official ties with nations that recognize Taiwanese sovereignty. Germany's Foreign Ministry recently reiterated its "one China" policy, where it maintains formal diplomatic relations with China, but also close informal ties with Taiwan. Since 2015, due to the inaction of the West, Vladimir Putin has had a free hand in the Syrian conflict. How has this affected Russia's foreign policy? Why does Putin believe he can exercise his power with impunity outside his national borders? Following the start of Russia's all-out war of aggression in Ukraine, many have been asking what Moscow's goals are and how Vladimir Putin's expansionist drive can be stopped. But to understand what is currently happening along the EU's external borders, it is necessary to first look to the Middle East. Beginning in September 2015, Putin has intervened in the Syrian war on the side of his historic ally President Bashar al-Assad. The goal is clear: Assad should remain head of state. Russia has tested virtually all of its weapons systems in Syria. The Russian president also challenged Western states early on, from here: In 2013, after the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons, then-US President Obama stated that Russia had now crossed the red line. However, a robust response from the West failed to materialize and six months later, Russia annexed Crimea. Putin subsequently turned his attention to the Mediterranean once again, deploying the Wagner Group to support Syrian soldiers on the ground. In 2015, Moscow made the Syrian-Russian alliance official and increased its presence, particularly in local military bases just outside NATO's gates. Indeed, with each new development, the international community could have put a stop to Moscow - but instead just stood by, idle. Journalist and director Édith Bouvier traveled to Russia, Syria, Europe and the United States to get to the bottom of Russia's military campaign in Syria. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited military personnel at the frontline in the eastern Donbas region. His visit came as Russian air strikes killed several people in Ukrainian cities near Kyiv. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has warned Western countries they'll need to support Ukraine for a long time. The EU already has already agreed to send Kyiv a million rounds of ammunition within the next 12 months. Kyiv says up to 13-thousand Ukrainian troops have been killed since the start of Russia's invasion. The true number can only be guessed at - in the chaos of war, many deaths can't be properly documented, as bodies can't be recovered. The soldiers registered as 'missing' leave behind loved ones desperate for news and unable to grieve. Wasserknappheit wird sich weltweit weiter ausbreiten und künftig auch dort auftreten, wo die Ressource derzeit noch reichlich vorhanden ist, wie in Zentralafrika, Ostasien und Teilen Südamerikas, wie die Vereinten Nationen (UN) in ihrem neuen Weltwasserbericht deutlich machen. Der Bericht soll als Diskussionsgrundlage auf der UN-Weltwasserkonferenz dienen, die aktuell in New York tagt. Dort geht es um die Umsetzung des Nachhaltigkeitsziels der Agenda 2030 für das Menschenrecht auf Wasser- und Sanitärversorgung. The powerful 6.5 magnitude tremor struck in the Hindu Kush mountains and was felt across Central and South Asia. The earthquake shook large parts of northern Afghanistan and Pakistan, killing at least 12 people and injuring many more.
