Presentation Title: How Computer Did Not Kill Practical Effects Bio: Fon Davis CG Artist, Founder, Fonco Creative Services In his two decade career, Fon Davis has worked on over 30 feature films. As an alumnus of the Industrial Light and Magic Model Shop, Fon has worked on features such as: Star Wars Pearl Harbor Starship Troopers Galaxy Quest Terminator III Mission Impossible III and the Matrix series. In addition to his work in visual effects, Fon has also worked in Disney's art departments as a concept designer/model maker, and on several stop motion projects including The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline. More recently, Fon was the Miniatures Supervisor on both Big Miracle with Drew Barrymore, and also on Neill Blomkamp's recent feature, Elysium. Having started Fonco Creative Services in 2000, Fon also writes and develops his own projects, frequently using his CG skills alongside practical model making. With his vast experience, Fon is well-placed to discuss the art and craft of model making for cinema, from concept design to hybrid practical and cgi effects, with a particular expertise in knowing where models and miniatures can play a role in today's digital world. MODEL HEROES - The ILM Star Wars Pioneers (Rare 8mm footage 1976) Incredibly rare footage from 1976 showing a newly formed rag-tag team of long-haired, very talented and creative innovators at ILM. There is a real joy and enthusiasm between everyone and their dedication is very apparent. In today's digital age it is both humbling and heart warming to see hands-on physical props and models being made. Of particular note is the moulding of a Death Star surface panel (1.45) ——————————————————————— Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) was founded in May 1975 by George Lucas who wanted his new film Star Wars to include visual effects that had never been seen before. After discovering that the in-house effects department at 20th Century Fox was no longer operational, Lucas approached Douglas Trumbull, best known for the effects on 2001: A Space Odyssey and Silent Running. Trumbull was however, already committed to working on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but suggested his assistant John Dykstra to Lucas. Dykstra brought together a small team of college students, artists, and engineers, and set them up in a warehouse in Van Nuys, California. Adam meets one of the adorable robot puppets made for the cult-favorite 1987 science fiction film *Batteries Not Included, which was a product of the ILM model shop where Adam eventually worked. Even though it was made over 30 years ago, this puppet has held up very well, showing intricately hand machined components and clear graphical details that the ILM artist meticulously applied all those years ago. Grant Imahara's AMAZING R2D2 replica came about after 10 ILM employees including Adam Savage and Fon Davis banded together in 2000 to build their very own R2 droids from scratch. It was a gigantic undertaking, even for those working with the real R2! Fon and Adam take a tour of Grant's replica and recall the loooong journey that led up to the collaboration's completion.
