This is the new Ford Focus! The Focus isn’t as popular as it used to be, having recently dropped out of the top 10 of the most popular cars in the UK. Well, Ford is looking to reverse that trend, and as a result it’s brought in a number of changes to make it more appealing. The new model is only a facelift rather than an all-new model, but there are still a couple of noticeable changes. Starting at the rear, there’s some new tail lights along with twin exhaust pipes. Around the front, there’s some new LED headlights along with a new grille design. The Ford badge has also been moved from the bonnet down to the grille. On the inside, the most notable change is the new infotainment screen. It comes equipped with Ford’s all-new infotainment system too, but it’s a bit laggy and not the best to use. There are some new digital dials as well. Elsewhere, the cabin is pretty well made, with a fair bit of storage and nice materials throughout. As it stands, there are two engine choices available, with the range-topper being a 1-litre turbo petrol that can deliver 155hp. It’s available as either a manual or automatic, and there’s a diesel due out next year which will only be available as an automatic. The new Focus starts from around £26,000, but should you choose it over competitors such as the Golf? Stick with Mat to see for yourself! Ford introduceert een vernieuwde Focus, Tijd voor een rijtest. Heeft de Ford Focus genoeg in huis om hem nog een paar jaar actueel te houden? ‘Wie veel waarde hecht aan sturen, moet een Focus nemen.’ Hoe vaak hebben we dat op de redactie al gehoord. Maar geldt dat anno 2022 nog steeds? Van echte elektrificatie is nog geen sprake. Ford spreekt wel over ‘Hybrid’, maar echt hybride is dat niet. Er is hier sprake van mild-hybride technologie. Een volwaardige hybride, plug-in hybride of elektrische Focus bestaat niet. Nog niet, want dat gaat in de toekomst ongetwijfeld gebeuren. Waarom we dat zo stellig zeggen? Simpel: vanaf 2026 krijgt elke Ford een volledig elektrische of plug-in hybride-aandrijflijn. In 2030 – slechts vier jaar later – biedt Ford alleen nog volledig elektrische personenauto’s in Europa aan. Ook de Focus gaat er dus aan geloven, maar nu nog niet. De komende jaren staat de Focus alleen met mild-hybride aandrijflijn (MHEV) in de showroom, of met een conventionele turbodiesel en turbobenzinemotor. Bij de huidige MHEV-techniek wordt de standaard dynamo van de 1.0 EcoBoost benzinemotor vervangen door een riemaangedreven geïntegreerde starter/generator (BISG). Die slaat in een 48-volt lithium-ion luchtgekoeld batterijpakket de energie op die normaal gesproken bij het remmen en uitrollen verloren gaat. Deze 48-volt batterij is onder de voorstoel van de passagier voorin geplaatst. Het BISG-systeem gebruikt de opgeslagen energie voor ondersteuning van de benzinemotor, zowel tijdens normaal rijden als accelereren. Het systeem kan dan tot 24 Nm extra koppel leveren Ook voorziet de BISG de elektrische uitrusting van de auto van stroom. De 1.0 EcoBoost met mild-hybride techniek is nu niet alleen met handgeschakelde zesbak leverbaar, maar ook een zeventraps PowerShift-automaat. Een echt sportieve keuze is dat niet. Deze automaat met dubbele koppeling heeft namelijk geen manuele stand. Dat vinden we dan weer jammer van Ford; een merk dat sportief rijden toch hoog in het vaandel heeft staan. Die milde vorm van ondersteuning merk je overigens wel op tijdens het rijden. Je voelt vooral bij lagere toerentallen dat het systeem de driecilinder benzinemotor een extra zetje in de rug geeft. En tijdens afremmen voel je dat de Focus afremt op de elektromotor om energie terug te winnen, maar alleen als de batterij daar behoefte aan heeft. Is de batterij vol, dan schakelt het regeneratieve systeem zich vanzelf uit. De handgeschakelde zesbak heeft in combinatie met de 155 pk sterke MHEV-aandrijflijn ontzettend lange verzetten. Zelden hebben wij de vijfde of zesde versnelling gebruikt. Dat komt niet alleen omdat het een vrij stille motor is en je dus weinig meekrijgt van een hoger toerental, maar ook omdat je zelfs bij snelheden van 90 km/u niet de behoefte voelt om op te schakelen, omdat de driecilinder nog relatief weinig toeren maakt. Een subtiele facelift dus voor de Ford Focus. Op motorisch vlak is er geen groot nieuws te melden. Aan de buitenkant zijn de aanpassingen beperkt gebleven. Het interieur onderging dankzij het forse touchscreen wel een flinke metamorfose. Voor de komende jaren moet dat genoeg zijn om interessant te blijven in dit segment, ook al ontbreekt PHEV- of hybridetechniek. In Nederland zijn die technieken niet heel relevant meer omdat de fiscale prikkels nagenoeg zijn verdwenen. Het wachten is dus op een 100 procent elektrische Focus met een degelijke actieradius. The Toyota GR86 is one of the most hyped-up cars of the past few years. There are good reasons for it - it’s brilliantly balanced, great looking and a whole lot of fun. However, as a result of this, you physically can’t buy a new one - the entire UK allocation sold out within 90 minutes of it going on sale here. However, we were trawling the online classifieds when we were supposed to be working and found one for sale for £40,000 - coincidentally, the same price as the new Ford Focus ST Track Pack. With 276bhp on tap, it’s significantly more powerful than the Toyota, not to mention faster - it’ll hit 62mph in just 5.7sec, compared to the GR86’s 6.3sec time. However, it is of course front-wheel drive, and it’s over 150kg heavier than the similarly-priced coupe. So, how do they stack up on track? We sent Richard Lane out to the fantastic Anglesey Circuit with instructions to drive around it in the Focus ST as fast as he could while Matt Prior tried to chase him down in the Toyota. The Ford Focus Active estate inspires confidence, making you more connected to what’s going on, and everyday driving becomes less of a chore as a result. The estate bodystyle costs £1,160 more than the Focus hatchback and if you value extra space in the rear, it seems a sensible option. The big, uniformly shaped load space has a few little tricks up its sleeve, too. You can remove the roller-blind parcel shelf and store it under the main boot floor. When that underfloor space is empty, it serves as a waterproof storage area, with the lid becoming a dividing wall that clips into place to separate your muddy boots in the front part of the boot from the stuff you’d rather not get grubby at the back. It’s not a bad device when you’re loading the boot with supermarket shopping bags, either, because it provides a bit of support to stop them spilling their contents all over the load bay on the way home.
