Glioblastoma (GBM) is a rare brain tumor that can rapidly grow and spread into nearby brain tissue. It is difficult to treat and has a poor prognosis. Treatment is a challenging task, due to the location and complexity of the tumor. Glioblastoma is not surgically curable because the tumor has left behind cells deep into the brain that can grow again. That's why many treatments fail or are ineffective for glioblastoma patients. Also, the brain has a special protective barrier called the blood-brain barrier that protects the brain from poison, and most chemotherapies are considered poisonous. However, there are new investigational therapies for GBM including Tumor Treating Fields, treatments that can potentially cross the blood-brain barrier, and next-generation sequencing. "Extreme Survivor" is a title reserved for people who live with glioblastoma (GBM), the most malignant brain tumor, for over a decade. This is the story of a father who was diagnosed with GBM in December of 2013 and underwent awake operation for resection of this tumor.
