Months after the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, I began filming the U.S. Army’s 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment (known as the Gunners) in Baghdad. The unit was housed in a bombed-out palace on the banks of the Tigris that they named Gunner Palace. Rather than just making a movie about the men, I suggested that we make a film together — an offer that the soldiers quickly embraced. They told the story of the war as only they could: They played guitar, spat out rhymes and played to the camera. But behind all their bravado and posturing, they were just kids who desperately wanted the world to understand the war through their eyes. In the last two months of 2003, the Gunners lost three men to I.E.D. attacks. They scrambled to create makeshift armor for their soft-skinned vehicles using scrap metal. When asked by a soldier about the lack of armor in 2004, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld famously said, “You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.” They were the army we had. They fought an enemy they couldn’t always see in a land they didn’t understand for reasons that were never entirely clear. In the midst of the pandemic, I visited the men and spoke with them about how they make sense of their role in a war that has yet to be fully reckoned with. And the timing couldn't be worse. Become a Video Lab member! 🤍 Iraq gets almost all of its water from two rivers: The Tigris and the Euphrates. Both begin in Turkey and make their way down the entire length of the country, before emptying into the Persian Gulf. The problem is - they are drying up. There are two main reasons for this. The first is geographical: Since both rivers begin in Turkey, Iraq doesn’t have control of how much water it receives. In the last 30 years, Turkey, Syria, and Iran have been building hundreds of dams along both rivers. Now only a quarter of the Euphrates reaches Iraq. Secondly, Iraq has been stuck in conflict for the last 16 years. In each case, the delicate network of treatment plants, dams, canals, and pipes has been repeatedly destroyed and neglected. All of this has boiled over in the city of Basra - at Iraq’s southern tip. Last summer, after hundreds were poisoned by the water - riots erupted and were deeply destabilizing for the new Iraqi government. If Iraq is to rebuild, it needs to get fresh water to its people - a challenge that is getting harder every year. Through Vox Atlas, producer Sam Ellis demonstrates where conflicts occur on a map and the ways in which foreign policy shapes a region. As we continue to look back on the 20th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, we're joined by Sami Rasouli, an Iraqi native who immigrated to the United States over 35 years ago and became a successful restaurateur and beloved member of the community in Minneapolis. After the U.S. invasion of his home country in 2003, he moved back to Iraq, where he founded the Muslim Peacemakers, a group that works to promote and practice nonviolent conflict resolution and intervention. Rasouli also founded the American Institute for English in Najaf, which was destroyed by a 2020 bombing. He is working on starting a new organization called the American-Iraqi Peace Initiative and currently resides in the U.S. with his family. The war in Iraq has "left scars and a visible legacy" among Iraqis, says Rasouli, who calls for "a just compensation" in the aftermath of the U.S. occupation. When thousands of United States troops from Georgia’s Fort Stewart and Fort Benning invaded Iraq on March 19, 2003, one was an Army specialist with a camcorder, Robert Ayres. Ayres was an infantryman deployed at a makeshift camp in the Kuwaiti desert a few weeks earlier called Camp Pennsylvania. But seeing all these buildings, many of them high-rises 11, 12 stories tall that have been practically reduced to rubble, is mind bending. This is something that seems entirely impossible both in terms of common sense and in terms of the laws of physics, laws of nature. Yet, right now, despite all the attempts by the terrorists to keep the city as their stronghold, the people of Mosul are getting their peaceful life back. It’s been 20 years since the United States and a handful of allies invaded Iraq in March 2003. The following years would herald decades of violence, instability and economic decline for the country. The Iraq War killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and more than 4,000 US service members, gave rise to groups like al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS), and cost billions in US taxpayer dollars. But what happened on the ground in the weeks and months that followed the invasion? Paul Bremer was appointed by then US President George W Bush to head the Coalition Provisional Authority, the temporary transitional government established immediately after the invasion. He held the post from 2003 to 2004. On UpFront, host Marc Lamont Hill challenges Bremer on the effects of his decisions in the first few months after the invasion and the legacy of these decisions for Iraq, its people and the region.
