Born in Scandiano in 1943, Luigi Ghirri spent his working life in the Emilia Romagna region, where he produced one of the most open and layered bodies of work in the history of photography. He was published and exhibited extensively both in Italy and internationally and was at the height of his career at the time of his death in 1992.
The exhibition consists of 25 vintage color photographs included in Ghirri's seminal 1978 publication and exhibition of the same title. This is the first time these important works will be exhibited in the United States. It is also the first one-person Luigi Ghirri exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery. Kodachrome è sicuramente il libro fotografico più conosciuto di Luigi Ghirri (Scandiano, 5 gennaio 1943 – Reggio Emilia, 14 febbraio 1992). Questa è la prima edizione del libro, autoprodotta da Luigi Ghirri nel 1978 e pubblicata dalla sua casa editrice Punto e Virgola (fondata nel 1977 insieme alla moglie Paola Borgonzoni e a Giovanni Chiaromonte). Il libro raccoglie il lavoro fotografico di Ghirri dal 1970 al 1978, per un totale di 92 fotografie a colori. I'm always looking for some good photography theory, and Ghirri's writings come highly recommended. Ghirri's 'Kodachrome' is also highly regarded, and quite simply excellent. Mack have done a great job with the publishing, as usual, and these books, long on my wish list, make a great addition to my collection.

Giovedì 16 febbraio si è tenuto il terzo incontro dal titolo “Luigi Ghirri, la Fotografia” con Giovanni Chiaramonte, fotografo che ha condiviso con Ghirri praticamente tutto il percorso straordinario dalla fotografia di ricerca linguistica-concettuale alla nuova fotografia a colori di paesaggio, cambiando la relazione tra fotografia e paesaggio, architettura, definizione dei luoghi. Chiaramonte in quel contesto è stato, con Ghirri, editore, docente, teorico di quella stagione che fece della fotografie italiana una tra le più avanzate.

Sesta puntata del format "Tra fotografia e fotografia". Stavolta affrontiamo un libro fotografico di importanza fondamentale per la storia della fotografia italiana, si tratta di Viaggio in Italia, fortemente voluto da Luigi Ghirri e nato dalla collaborazione di 20 fotografi.
Luigi Ghirri (1943-1992) è stato un artista di caratura enorme. Ha tradotto in fotografie la radice antica, quella rurale non meno di quella monumentale, dell'Italia e della sua cultura. Ha lasciato infine alla nostra meditazione una quantità di immagini inconfondibili, desaturate, immerse nel silenzio, nella solitudine e nell'assenza di qualcosa di indefinito che pure duole, si incide, scava e commuove, azionando in noi il meccanismo del ricordo e della nostalgia.

Luigi Ghirri was an extraordinary photographer, as well as a writer and curator whose career was so rich and varied that it seems like a lesson in the contemporary history of the medium. Although well known in his native Italy, Ghirri does not yet have the international audience his work meritsperhaps because he died so young. "It's Beautiful Here, Isn't It..."the first book published on Ghirri in the U.S.will establish him as the seminal artist he was. Uncannily prescient, Ghirri shared the sensibility of what became known in the U.S. as the New Color and the New Topographics movements before they had even been named. Like his counterparts in Italian cinema, Ghirri believed that the local and the universal were inseparable and that life's polaritieslove and hate, present and pastwere equally compelling. Not surprisingly, his interests encompassed all the arts: he worked in Giorgio Morandi's studio and with architect Aldo Rossi, while influencing a generation of photographers, including Olivo Barbieri and Martin Parr. This dynamic new book includes a selection of Ghirri's essays published in English for the first time, as well as a selected chronology.

The interest in the theme of the landscape is gradually growing: the reading of places belonging to a lesser-known Italy, off the beaten track of conventional tourism, seems to correspond with the search for an identity, individual and collective. 'Paesaggi di cartone' (Cardboard Landscapes) was originally produced as a one-off photo album that he had donated to the Museum of Modern Art in 1975. 45 years later, and MOMA have reproduced the album in a facsimile edition. Nice!

Founder and director of Mai 36 Galerie, Victor Gisler, speaks about the exhibition "Studio", that puts works by Luigi Ghirri, Giorgio Morandi and sculptures by Koenraad Dedobbeleer into dialogue. In 1990 Luigi Ghirri visited and documented the places where Giorgio Morandi had lived and worked: the two houses in Bologna where the painter lived with his mother and sisters and Grizzana where he spent the summer months. These photographs are shown together with two works by Giorgio Morandi in the Mai 36 Galerie. In direct response to this, the artist Koenraad Dedobbeleer created new sculptures that specifically take up the idea and theme and complement the exhibition in the sense of the overarching context of the studio (Italian; Latin: studium; zeal, work, effort). Luigi Ghirri foi um fotógrafo extraordinário, além de escritor e curador, cuja carreira foi tão rica e variada que parece uma lição de história contemporânea do meio. Embora bem conhecido em sua Itália natal, Ghirri ainda não tem o público internacional que seu trabalho merece - talvez porque ele morreu muito jovem. Per il terzo atto del programma di ricerca legato al Fondo Luigi Ghirri, la Fondazione Querini Stampalia presenta un progetto che mette a confronto fotografia, pittura e poesia aprendo una nuova occasione di valorizzazione tra i linguaggi dell’arte. Un dialogo è a tre: un artista visivo come Giuseppe Cacccavale e un grande poeta come Andrea Zanzotto si confrontano con le opere di Luigi Ghirri sul grande tema del paesaggio, fil rouge che lega tutti gli atti del Fondo. I linguaggi della fotografia, della poesia e della pittura vengono qui a comporre un paesaggio inedito tanto irriconoscibile e trasfigurato da sembrare il paesaggio di un altro mondo, fantascientifico appunto. La mostra "Un'evidenza fantascientifica. Luigi Ghirri, Andrea Zanzotto, Giuseppe Caccavale" (14 maggio - 17 ottobre 2021), a cura di Chiara Bertola e Andrea Cortellessa, è promossa dalla Fondazione Querini Stampalia e dal Comune di Pieve di Soligo in collaborazione con la Famiglia Zanzotto in occasione delle celebrazioni del centenario della nascita di Andrea Zanzotto.
Milano (askanews) - Lo stand di Aste Bolaffi a MIA Photo Fair presenta immagini di molti grandi autori, ma l'emozione, a nostro avviso, ruota principalmente intorno a due magnifiche immagini di Luigi Ghirri, il grande fotografo emiliano che ha dato un contributo decisivo alla creazione della stessa idea di paesaggio italiano. In mostra due lavori che, nella loro solo apparentemente semplice costruzione, si configurano come icone di un luogo sentimentale. Silvia Berselli, esperta del dipartimento di Fotografia di Aste Bolaffi: "E' una cartolina, è una copia vera? C'è sempre questa ambiguità nella fotografia di Ghirri - ci ha detto - che ha anche un senso un po' ironico, e allo stesso tempo però anche romantico del paesaggio che è spesso anche un paesaggio interiore, del nostro ricordo, della nostra infanzia". Lo stand a MIA, oltre che un'occasione di confronto con il pubblico della fiera milanese, vuole essere il trampolino per l'asta fotografica online che Bolaffi organizza per il prossimo 11 aprile, nella quale all'incanto andranno, oltre a diveri altri Ghirri, anche immagini di autori del calibro di Cartier-Bresson o Berenice Abbott. "Questa - ha aggiunto Berselli - è un'asta particolarmente fortunata per gli amanti di Ghirri, perché ci sono diversi suoi pezzi, insieme ad altri scatti che qui al MIA sono esposti un po' come presentazione della nostra asta, perché ci piace anche l'idea di avvicinare sul mercato il pubblico italiano, che a volte è ancora un po' diffidente, alla fotografia, alla fotografia d'autore, al vintage". Un avvicinamento che parte dalla consapevolezza che la grande fotografia sia a tutti gli effetti arte, che poi è proprio il presupposto di base di MIA Photo Fair.

Color plays a unique roll in photography when its used effectively. In the early days of photography, images were rendered in monochrome. Today we have the unique advantage of unlimited possibilities with technology to do almost anything we can imagine, but the challenge of color still remains.
