New Guinea is the third biggest island on the planet, after Australia and Greenland. And there is a straight line that divides it between Papua New Guinea, a sovereign country, and Papua, an Indonesian region. Indonesian Papuans have no cultural ties or common history with the rest of the Indonesians. Besides, they feel mistreated by Jakarta. And this explains why there is such a strong separatist movement that tries to make West Papua an independent nation. In the meantime, most of the Papuans live under different tribal systems: many of these tribes have never been contacted by Westerns or Indonesians. This means that many tribemen don’t even know which country do they belong to and they cannot even vote on the Indonesian elections. So Why is Indonesia so keen on keeping their territory? What do the West Papuan nationalist want to achieve? Can they win this fight? Just north of Australia a secret war is being fought. West Papuan independence fighters and Indonesian security forces are involved in a protracted and bloody battle over the issue of Papuan independence. The conflict escalated after young West Papuan fighters killed Indonesian road workers building a highway into Papua’s central highlands. The Indonesia government hit back hard, deploying hundreds of police and military who attacked the region in an effort to root out the rebels. Last year mass protests broke out, with civil resistance leaders from in and outside West Papua calling for freedom from Indonesia. With foreign media largely shut out, the story of this unfolding humanitarian disaster remains untold. Hundreds have died and local officials estimate that over 40 000 people have been displaced. There are allegations of torture and human rights abuses. Foreign Correspondent has been able to report from inside the conflict zone, gaining access to exclusive pictures of the recent unrest and speaking to eyewitnesses of the violence. “I have to yell out to the world…because if I don’t, we’re going to be weaker and the indigenous people will be wiped out ”, says one West Papuan highlander who’s looking after children orphaned in the recent fighting. “We will not retreat. We will not run. We will fight until recognition dawns ” , says a member of West Papua’s young guerrilla force whose ranks include teenagers orphaned in the ongoing conflict. “Dialogue is needed but dialogue which is constructive”, says Indonesia’s former Security Minister. “We have closed the door for dialogue on a referendum. No dialogue for independence.” Sally Sara reports on a war with no end in sight. Video and photos in HD I have made during my trip to Papua in Indonesia. This video is part of the trip I’ve made in Indonesia in August of 2014. The part in Papua (among the Dani villages in the Baliem Valley) was an organized trekking of 5 days, with a personal local guide and a couple of porters. This was not a group tour with other tourists. In fact, I have seen almost no other tourists in Papua at the time of my visit. The tour was called: “5 DAYS - 4 NIGHTS BALIEM VALLEY EASY HIKING - Option 2” Cost (in 2014): US$ 620 (including accommodation and meals) First part of the video has been taken in the Anemoigi Village, were they have made a tribal war dance for me. Also a visit to the village of Sumpaima to view the 250 years old Mummy. After that, there is the video and images of the trekking in the Baliem valley, to the Dani villages of Kurima, Kilise and Yetni. In addition, there is the video of the funeral of a member of the Dani people (I have been lucky to witness this ceremony as a guest), with the traditional cooking of the pigs with hot stones. Papua is bordered by the nation of Papua New Guinea to the east, and by West Papua province to the west. Since 2002, Papua province has special autonomy status, making it a special region. Its capital is Jayapura. It was formerly called Irian Jaya (and earlier West Irian or Irian Barat) and comprised all of Indonesian New Guinea. In 2002 the current name was adopted and in 2003 West Papua province was created from western parts of Papua province. Papua Island is a wild place, to say the least. In many ways, it's considered 'the last frontier' in terms of off-the-beaten-path places on earth. And I went there completely alone, in search of the world's last humans who eat other humans. It's the last known place on earth to have this kind of bizarre culture and tradition. Papua Island is (politically) split into two halves. The Western half is a part of Indonesia, while the Eastern half is Papua New Guinea, an independent country. I showed up in West Papua, all alone, and had to figure out how I was going to travel deep into the jungle to meet the tribe. After a massive logistical nightmare (see my BTS video on my 2nd channel linked above), I ended up making it to the tribe where I spent 2 days, and it was absolutely incredible to learn about their unique way of life. Breathtaking dives in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Kri Island, Indonesian coral reefs. As part of Coral Triangle Raja Ampat in West Papua has the highest biodiversity and the most colorful reefs on the planet, around 75% of the world’s coral species live here. The size, maturity and healthiness of corals in this region is insane! A large part of the marine life in Raja Ampat is protected by 7 Marine Protected Areas (MPA's). Raja Ampat is an archipelago of over 1500 small islands, including the four main islands of: Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo. We started our trip in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), 2 flight transfers, 2 boat transfers and +30 hours later we arrived at Kri Island at Kri Eco Resort + Papua Diving for 10 days. Together with my daughter, Isabelle, we made 22 dives at the most beautiful dive sites there are. All the dive sites are 5-25 minutes from Kri Island: Kri Eco Jetty, Chicken Bay, Mikes Point (!!), Blue Magic, Sardines, Sapokren Jetty, Melissa’s Garden (!!), Chicken Reef, Sorido Wall, Friwenbonda, Citrus Reef, Cape Kri and a lot more! We stayed on Kri Island, at Kri Eco Resort. Kri Eco Resort is located in the center of the Raja Ampat Marine park at Kri Island. Papua Diving provides guided dives for Kri Eco Resort and (sister resort) Sorido Bay Resort. The local Papuan dive guides of Papua Diving are the best experienced dive guides in Raja Ampat. Raja Ampat has more than 1000 species of fish, 540 species of coral and 700 species of mollusk. Predatory fish such as Barracudas, Blacktip Reef Sharks and Whitetip Reef Sharks are fully present. Large Oceanic Manta rays are attracted to the rich plankton waters. Schools of fish are everywhere and sometimes a bait ball can be seen. Beside the beauty marinelife the Kri’s forests are rich in birdlife and reptiles. A special part of the marine park are the Mangroves at Hidden Bay (6:06), they offer critical nursing environments for juveniles of fish species. World's largest amount of mangrove coverage can be found in Indonesia. The Mangroves where one of the highlight’s of this trip! During our stay we made excursions to Fam Islands, Hidden Bay and The Passage, they are the very definition of paradise. - (7:00) Fam Islands are a group of islands in the Raja Ampat Archipelago. White limestone cliffs plunge into the sea. Ultramarine blue lagoons are nestled next to monumental pinnacles and untouched beaches. - (6:06) Hidden Bay has a mangrove system of clear mirror-still blue water, where soft corals grow on the roots of mangrove trees. Rising above the foliage hornbills and parrots swoop between the trees. Hidden Bay is a complex network of interconnected water channels and lakes. - (7:23) The Passage lies between the island of Gam and Waigeo. It can be described as river flowing between the two islands. The nutrient rich waters that are drawn through by the tides feed a vast wealth of marine biodiversity. Above water the sheer limestone cliffs make this a place excessively beautiful. Places like this are sensitive to climate change. It's frightening to see how many people close their eyes for climate change. Climate change and a decrease of biodiversity are caused by overpopulation. Overpopulation is the main cause of most urgent problems in the world. This film is the result of around 20 hours of 4k video footage and a few months editing. Shot in May / June 2019. Freeport Indonesia* Setelah menempuh perjalanan dengan menggunakan kendaraan roda empat, Presiden Joko Widodo dan Ibu Iriana Joko Widodo bersama rombongan tiba di Grasberg pada Kamis, 1 September 2022, pukul 08.15 Waktu Indonesia Timur (WIT). Di Grasberg, Presiden dan Ibu Iriana didampingi Presiden Direktur PT. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Tony Wenas mengunjungi Museum Bunaken untuk mendapatkan penjelasan tentang sejarah pertambangan PTFI. Tony menjelaskan bahwa Grasberg adalah tambang kedua, sedangkan tambang pertama adalah Ertsberg. “Sekarang di kedua tambang itu sudah tidak ada lagi penambangan?” tanya Presiden. “Sudah tidak ada penambangan 100 persen di Etsberg dan Grasberg. Sekarang sedang reklamasi dan kita me-_maintain_ kestabilan lerengnya,” ucap Tony. Sambil melihat kawasan tambang terbuka PTFI dari Grasberg, Presiden juga berbincang dengan Presiden Komisaris PTFI Richard Adkerson. Setelah berada di Grasberg selama 2 jam, Presiden dan Ibu Iriana bersama rombongan melanjutkan perjalanan menuju pertambangan bawah tanah.
