When playing a chord, take account of: - Chord itself - notes that make up the chord - Chord voicing - the order of and interval between notes The voicing of a chord relates to the intervals between the notes. You can alter the tension of the chord by altering the voicing of the chord, even if you’re playing the same notes. For example, C major is made up of C, E and G, and is a triad. E minor is made up of E, G and B, and is also a triad. In this piano lesson we will take a look at how one might make these "boring" triads more interesting, by doubling and moving notes around. Voicing tutorial on a bright note and how "needling" this note evens that tone out. This is a 1951 Poole Piano Co. Spinet. Hey Guys! So here's a quick little tutorial on voicing. This little spinet here had one note that was kinda sticking out. So I took my needling tool. The hammers are pretty worn on this piano. And it's an inexpensive spinet, so I'm just going to go and do some needling right on the hammer. On an upright piano such as this, the hammers don't shift left or right so you don't need to be concerned about voicing specifically for a shift position as you do in a grand. It worked out great! Piano voicing, also known as tone regulating, is usually referring to the process of adjusting the parts of the piano to produce a change in the tonal quality aiming for the desired sound. You are never stuck with a piano sounding the way it does and there are many variables that can change voicing; from simply using the pedals to affect tone or having a technician re-align, re-shape, or alter the density of the felts covering the hammers striking the string to produce a warmer or brighter tone. Some things that affect voicing include hardness” or “softness” of the hammer felt, the weight of each hammer, the shape (“crown”) of the soundboard, a piano’s case design and construction, materials used throughout the piano, and the placement of your piano in a room. On a basic level, each individual playing the same instrument can produce different tonal qualities or voice just from their unique playing style. There are a number of artists who use prepared pianos; tacks on the hammers, alternative tunings, items placed inside that can add unique texture when the piano is played. In this lesson we are going to cover what a voicing is, what makes it rootless and why we use rootless voicings. We are then going to build rootless voicings for major, minor and dominant chords and then cover the best way to practise these voicings so that your are comfortable playing them on demand in all 12 keys. What is a Voicing & What Makes it Rootless? A voicing is the way that we choose to spread out or arrange the notes of a chord on the keyboard. We learn in the lesson on chord extensions that we can extend the chord past the octave to play the 9th, 11th and 13th . To play a rootless voicing, we leave out the root of the chord and play one of the extensions instead so for example we could play the 3rd , 5th , 7th and 9th of the chord. Why Do We Use Rootless Voicings? Rootless voicings achieve very smooth voice leading in a 251 progression which has 2 main benefits: The first is that the chords will flow from one to the next very smoothly which sounds great to the listener! The second is that it reduces hand movement to a minimum so that you can move from one chord to the next very easily and focus you attention on soloing in your right hand. Rootless voicings free up a finger for more interesting and colourful note choices such as a 9th, 11th or 13th which makes your playing sound more professional. If you are playing in a jazz band, the bass player will have the root of the chord covered so there is no need for you to play it. Rootless Voicings For Major Chords To turn a major chord into a rootless voicing, we add the 9th and then drop the root. The alternative way to build a rootless voicing for major chords is to build a minor 7th chord off the major 3rd . In the key of C you would build a minor 7th chord of E which is the third. Rootless Voicings For Minor Chords We build minor rootless voicings in the same way as with major chords, we add the 9 and we drop the root. Remember that both major and minor chords share the same 9th. The alternative way to build a rootless voicing for minor chords is to go to the minor 3rd and build a major 7th chord. In the key of C minor we build a major 7th chord of Eb which is the minor 3rd. Inverting Rootless Voicings There are two important inversions that you need to learn for rootless voicings – Type A and Type B. The formula for Type A rootless voicings is 3-5-7-9. The formula for Type B rootless voicings is 7-9-3-5. Type A rootless voicings always have the 3rd on the bottom and Type B always have the 7th on the bottom. An easy way to get from Type A to Type B is to take the bottom two notes and put them on the top (or take the top two notes and put them on the bottom). Why Invert Rootless Voicings? You might be wondering why we invert rootless voicings and the answer is so that we can play them in the correct register of the piano. Rootless voicings sound best when played right in the centre of the piano (around middle C). If you play rootless voicings too low on the keyboard they will sound ‘muddy’ and distorted. If you play them too high they will sound very ‘thin’. By inverting rootless voicings you can always play them on or close to the centre of the piano to get the best sound. Dominant Rootless Voicings Rootless dominant 7th voicings are a bit trickier than major and minor chords. We could voice them in the same way that we have voiced the major and minor chords. However, this would not voice lead smoothly in the context of a 251 progression. Instead we substitute the 5th for the 13th. This creates tension and dissonance between the 13th and then b7th .

► Free Jazz Piano Crash Course: 🤍 We are going to take the well-known tune “In A Sentimental Mood” and look at the different options we have available to harmonize the ascending melodic motif at the start of each A Section. We will explore the 4-way-close, drop 2 voicings, passing chords, and finally reharmonize the melody with quartal voicings. Why would we want to use this you might ask? Well these techniques are optional things you can do to enhance, tweak, or even completely change the sound of the melody. The reason I’ve chosen this tune is that the same ascending melodic figure repeats 3 times in the head of the tune and understanding these concepts will allow you to add a variety of colours, textures, and expression to an otherwise identical melody line. The 4-Way-Close & Drop 2 Voicings The 4-way close is a method to harmonise a step wise melody line with alternating 7th chords and rootless dominant b9 chords. For each chord tone we simply play the root position 7th chord with the top of bottom note doubled. For none chord tones, we simply build a diminished chord with the top and bottom note doubled. We can then create a more open sounding voicing by dropping the second note into our left hand. Add Passing Chords We can introduce a passing chord for the last note of the ascending line to create a stronger sense of resolution into the next bar. We can use the normal V7 chord, or alternatively, the tritone substitution. Reharmonisation A more complex option is to rehamonise the whole passage. I like to do this So What Chords. The So What Chord is a quartal voicing which are harmonically ambigious – making them well-suited to rehamonise melodies. It’s now over to you to apply these concepts to the tunes you are playing. A quick introduction to voicing and hammer maintenance
Four Awesome Major Chord Voicings for Piano takes as an example the C major chord and presents four different useful, mature-sounding voicings, ranging from a closed cluster major chord voicing all the way to a very open, modern sounding voicing. These let you spice up your piano playing. This chord voicing concepts presented in the current piano lesson are tightly tied in to an older video of mine discussing similar ideas, but in the context of minor (not major) chords: 🤍 What Four Major Chord Voicings are Shown? Form 1: C G (LH), A B D E (RH) Form 2: C G (LH), C D E G (RH) Form 3: C G B (LH), D E G B (RH) Form 4: C G D (LH), E B E (RH) Form 4B: E C (LH), G C D G (RH) Each of these voicings basically "dresses up" each chord with additional notes to enhance its frequency content: Form 1: This is actually a Cmaj9 add 13 Form 2: This is a C add 2 Form 3: This is a Cmaj9 Form 4: This is a Cmaj9 Form 4B: This is a C add 2 Who is this Lesson Aimed At? This lesson is aimed at piano players interested in expanding their major chord voicing vocabulary. Although some theoretical concepts are discussed throughout the video, YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW ANY THEORY to make use of the forms presented! Just watch, listen and copy what I play, and enjoy! These chord voicings are not difficult to play and do not require any special piano technique. Which Chord Voicing Should I Use? The choice of voicing will be determined largely on the context: cluster (close-spaced) chords will tend to evoke a darker mood. The more open voicings might fit in with a more ambient setting. It's really up to you as a piano player to experiment with them in different settings. Many times switching between more closed / more open voicings will create an interesting musical contrast. For example: play the closed form (Form 1) C major chord voicing, and then switch to the open form (Form 4) for F major. Do not overuse any one particular form, or your listeners will get bored. Don't forget, to use these ideas for piano you must practice, Practice, PRACTICE. Transpose each and every major chord voicing form to all possible chords. Be able to play all forms immediately, and you will be rewarded with the ability to switch between them on the fly, as well as begin to think for yourself on ways for coming up with additional ideas! The 7-1-5 "Voicing" is not a voicing at all, but refers to playing the 7th, 1st and 5th degrees of a scale, which - when played together or arpeggiated - go well with many chords constructed on the same scale. For example, just playing a 7-1-5 with different bass notes will yield completely different voicings for known chords. In this video I'll outline the idea and show you how it works in context by playing some harmonic progressions for you to actually hear what it sounds like. ► Download the workbook: 🤍 In this lesson we explore the beautiful 1436251 Progression in the key of Eb Major. If you are looking for a nice chord progression to introduce your jazz standards, this is the progression you have been waiting for. We start by building the diatonic 7th chords in the key of Eb to understand the base chords that we are working with. We then start to change the chord qualities to dominant 7 which allows us to access more interesting colours and textures. This progression is the perfect introduction for any tune that starts on the Imaj7 chord. A nice touch is to run up the upper structure triad on the final V7 chord which then leads smoothly and convincingly into the start of the tune. We demonstrate using this intro for the tunes "Misty" and "Over The Rainbow". #JazzPianoChords #JazzChordProgressions
