This tutorial is for windows 7. However the steps are similar for vista and XP The DNS server i use is Google's public DNS server Written instructions. 1. Click on the start menu 2. In the search bar type cmd and hit enter 3. Type in the command line "ipconfig" 4. Scroll up to your connection; it should list the DNS suffix, ipv6 address, ipv4 address, subnet mask, and Gateway. 5. Either leave up the page or write down the IPv4 address, subnet mask, and Default Gateway 6. Click on the start menu again 7. In the search programs and files bar type "Network" 8. Click on "Network and sharing center" 9. On far left click the "change adapter settings" 10. Next right click on your internet connection 11. Choose properties 12. Double click on "internet protocol version 4(TCP/IPv4) 13. Tick the "use following IP address" 14. In the ip line type the IPv4 from command prompt 15. Same with the subnet and default gateway lines 16. Next tick the "use the following DNS server and addresses" 17. In the preferred DNS server type "8.8.8.8" and in alternative DNS type "8.8.4.4" this is Google's public DNS servers. 18. Click ok, and ok 19. Close the adapter settings page 20. Complete

A single domain can use more than one DNS server like google.com which needs lots of name servers to support all its incoming DNS queries. Due to this reason a large scale network will have both a primary and secondary DNS servers. However with having many DNS servers, communication between each of them needs to done so that the records are updated frequently. This is possible by a process called zone transfer which is explained in the video. Next topic that was discussed is DNS name resolution. The entire step by step process of how a website when typed into a web browser returns back to the client its IP address. In this video, I show how to configure a primary DNS server or a master DNS server. I've gone over the Linux DNS Server Configurations in-depth, step by step. There are three types of DNS servers: primary, secondary, and caching-only. Each DNS server has its own set of capabilities. Although all DNS servers are used to provide the same name-resolution function. The Primary DNS Server, also known as the Master DNS Server, has been described in this video. When a DNS server manages a domain's domain records or is in charge of a domain's DNS records, that DNS server is referred to as the master DNS server for that domain. The DNS records for that domain will be answered authoritatively by that DNS server. A domain DNS record must be hosted on one or more DNS servers in order to be resolved. The Master DNS Server, also known as the Primary DNS Server, creates a zone file for that domain and stores all of the domain entries in it. When the DNS Server is queried about domain DNS records, it reads the zone file and responds to the query. Linux DNS Server Configuration is extremely simple, and I've told you how to do it step by step. DNS servers are classified as Primary, Secondary, or Caching Only depending on their configuration. A DNS server is called a primary DNS or master DNS server if it manages a zone or domain's DNS Records. We can set up a Linux DNS server in failover mode so that if the primary DNS server goes down, the secondary DNS server will respond to DNS queries. As a result, the master DNS Server's standby Replica is used as a backup. and caching-only DNS is neither a master nor a slave; rather, it is a standard DNS server that responds to DNS queries and caches them, then responds from the cache when the same query comes up again. The default behaviour of all DNS servers is to respond from the cache; however, caching-only receives the query and also forwards it to an upstream DNS server, serving as a DNS Forwarder.
