Would have been nice to actually go into what was said, and how the officials missed the call, but saw it on replay in the stadium and showed the red anyway.
Was never a fan of France, but after that shameful display from Zidane, they earned themseleves a lifelong opposition from me. Along with Suarez's WC bite and my dislike of Uraguay to this day.
First use of var in fotball
This was the World Cup that made me hate the Italian Football Team. They were gifted such an egregious penalty from a dive against Australia that FIFA issued an apology to Australia for the incident, then this disgusting act of disrespect from Materazzi. On top of the fact that the overwhelming majority of the team had just been found guilty for match fixing in the Serie A. Very happy they haven't been to the last two World Cups, can only hope to not see them in 2026.
It's such a shame that casual fans or non-fans only think of Zidane as "that headbutt guy," when he was an elegant and sublime player who is likely one of the greatest of all time.
Anyone would've done the same as Zidane.
I wished he just ignored the Italian player and controlled himself. Another world cup trophy would've sealed his legacy.
Zidane was an inspired choice in my fantasy football team for this tournament - until the final. I didn't end up winning our mini league.
Brilliant as always. π
I keep telling people Materazzi was the MVP of the final game and nobody believes me lol. Scored the equalizer after giving away a penalty, got the best player in the world sent off at a crucial moment, and converted his penalty in the shootout to keep the pressure on France.
i wanna read zizou's lasagne tips
Italians played dirty
to say that this moment was shocking is the biggest understatement
it was unbelievable. something no one could have made up
We know what happened. We want to know what Mattarazzi said π
This headbutt >> that World Cup
Zidane headbutts matterazi for family. He is a true gentle man. Fifa world cup isnt something that is important to him. It is family
France is proud of its black, Arab, white, Asian, wherever citizens. France is a different country.
Zidane's performance against Brazil and that cheeky Panenka against Buffon will live in my memory forever!
Zidane was always heavily overrated, during his entire career I never got what people saw in him. He was quite unimpressive and only stood out because France's team was mostly built on defense, not on technical skills. But compared to the rest of football, he was rather unremarkable, there were far more gifted and fascinating players around at that time.
